how does a bar even go out of business?

you are literally selling stuff(liquor) that doesnt expire at a 500%-1000+% markup

its literally free money, how hard can it be

>> No.12833032

Have you ever even watched the show? These "easy" businesses go under for a myriad of reasons, like unattractive venues, poor investments, troublesome customers, unskilled workers, etc. Basically the only way a bar (or restaurant for that matter) can be successful is if it convinces its community that its worth spending money in.

easy solution: have a long bar and two doors. one side is the bar, the other is a fast service takeout counter. open the takeout place mid morning, but keep the bar side closed till late afternoon. if you're located in the right spot, the lunch rush should allow one to sell copious amounts of alcohol in the evening

1. Piss poor marketing. (wrong kind of bar for the surrounding clientele.)
2. Piss poor management. Too many times functioning alcoholics think it's a good idea to buy a bar so they can make the bar their personal playground.
3. Poor service. Workers fuck around and think they can treat the bar like their home.

Running a bar is simple as well as difficult. It takes a disciplined person because you have to be interested in profiting from the drinking scene without partaking in the drinking.

I agree that fundamentally there should be little overhead. However, you don't take into account things like getting your license, managing clientele (drunks are not fun to deal with in a management position) and managing employees (most bartenders are drunks which are also not fun to manage.)

If you got a stable head on your shoulders, don't drink while on the job, and are capable with dealing with drunks appropriately when things are heated then managing a bar is a good way to make a living and possibly get wealthy depending on the volume of customers.

I watch the show. Here's why they fail:
1) Owner has no concept of spending to earning (continuous investment into a system WITHOUT PLANNING)
2) Incompetent, untrained employees that constantly overpour/give away drinks and fuck up menu items such that the only remaining patrons of the bar essentially drink for free
3) Lack of health, sanitization, and behavioral standards further drive away target customer base
4) No marketability (the bar lacks distinguishing features to attract new customers)
Taffer always fixes #4 with an interesting new concept to attract people, which is why sales always increase in the following weeks. As long as the owner doesn't change the renovation back, they'll receive new customers for a while.

Taffer also sets standards for #2 and #3, but the bar can still fail when the owner is too lazy to enforce these standards on his employees.

#1 is the point of failure in most cases after the renovation. Jon can build a new bar and train everyone in it, but it won't last if the owner is too stupid to crunch the numbers and plan for success. When sales start to slide off, the owner has a responsibility to readjust business strategy. A weak owner will rely on his employees to continue unsupervised productivity in these instances. The business is failing from a planning standpoint, so no matter how much effort the employees put in, the business will continue failing. In turn, employees recognize their wasted efforts and give up on your standards because all they care about is keeping a job; as a weak owner, you won't fire them (and they know that too). In most cases, Taffer's "owner training" begins with a kick in the pants and ends in a pep talk. For a few owners, it's enough to rekindle their passion of owning and operating a business. For most others, they either have no idea what to do once he's gone or don't want to constantly work toward success.

running a successful bar is piss easy, but you have to JUST focus on being a bar. the vibe and music playlist is a big part of it too. people need to feel comfortable enough in the bar to be able to talk to any randoms, but at the same time be able to hang out with their 2-3 friends and have a conversation.
Other than that, making money in a bar is just buying $9 bottles of supermarket vodka and selling $6 gin n tonics, earning you a $60 something profit.
