Nah, you just got tricked and didn't realize it. When you and I ate it as kids, the "Pan Pizza" was the default style.
Now the default is the "hand tossed" they debuted in 2014. After Domino's revamped their shit, Pizza Hut panicked and copied them wholesale, down to the butter-soaked, garlic-salted crust. And yeah, it's disgusting and why everyone now thinks of Pizza Hut as the worst chain.

"Original Pan" is now a $2 upcharge, but still tastes like it did back then. The difference in quality between the two is unreal.

This is really the answer. Kids are stupid and have shit taste. This is something you realize when you revisit some of the crap you loved as a kid in your late 20's and early 30's. Chances are you loved some really awful food because you hadn't tried that many things yet so you were easily impressed. The food industry has known this for decades and specifically targets children with some of the worst crap you can get. Remember Lunchables? Mountain Dew? McNuggers dunked in BBQ sauce? Just be glad you grew out of that shit. Some folks never do.

Pizza hut is unironically a good chain. Chains get shit on because most of them are actual shit. Papa johns, sarpinos, dominos, little ceasars are all garbage. Pizza Hut actually puts out a consistent 7/10 pizza

I'd say the issue more comes from the fact that boomer megachains were built on delivering "acceptable" quality at affordable prices, and can't compete as well now.

The problem with that is that modern supply chain means independent restaurants and small chains can get better ingredients than the megachains and sell them at similar prices with far better product served.

Olive Garden, for example, is overcooked, flavorless junk that doesn't salt their pasta water so they get longer warranty on their pots. For the same prices I can go to a local place that makes everything from scratch.

This has been my experience as well. It seems counter-intuitive because economies of scale ought to lead to the best prices at the places run by largest corporations. But there's a big issue operating when it comes to food in particular. That's freshness. Big chains seek to minimize highly perishable ingredients and maximize the shelf stable ones to cut down on spoilage. That also means the employees preparing the food do not have to be all that skilled because it's mostly assembly and heating it up. Smaller places can choose to take the risk of using fresh ingredients prepared with greater skill. This will result in better food than that served in big chain places. Not all small places have to talent to pull this off - it requires someone running the kitchen who actually gives a shit. Those who do will always serve better food than chain places, sometimes for just about the same prices.

Not the Anon you're replying to but he's not entirely wrong. In terms of mass market food a lot of what's sold in America is pretty disgusting. We're just used to it so we don't notice. When you travel to a place with higher standards then come back stuff like Pizza Hut does look like gross comedic overkill - like someone is setting out to make the most disgusting pizza possible.

There's a very particular aesthetic in American fast food that amounts to "take the cheapest meat and cheese you can get and cover some kind of starch with as much of it as you can until you have a greasy, starchy, gooey, salty mess". Pizza hut pizza springs from that aesthetic, as does the cheesesteak and loaded tots/fries. When I was a teen I liked the joy of overkill these foods displayed. But as an adult I do find that kind of excess disgusting, because I'd rather avoid the cheapest meat and cheese available instead of wallowing in as much of it as I can. Plus I don't like the way I feel after eating that kind of stuff, which is the same reason I think McDonald's is disgusting.

Some things are just a matter of the quality of the ingredients, you joker. A pineapple tasting just sour is not a "style". Neither is a tomato tasting like water. Heck, Hershey chocolate tasting like butyric acid (vomit or milk gone funky) is hardly a style either. It's only good fresh and in personal portions. Their full size pizzas are too greasy and taste like dong if it gets cold. I'm not above cheap pizzas, but Pizza Hut is definitely bottom rung in my book. Just under Papa John's.
