Because they were intentionally designed to be absurd and impossible e.g. lasting forever or giving you the taste of (and possibly also the calories / nutrition, I'm not sure) three different meals with each one happening in distinct succession somehow in a way that satisfies you as much as regular eating would.
Even in the fictional world these come from they didn't work.

>Yfw you'll never be able to live in a rustic oceanside village and stroll down to the local food shack that sits on top of a cliff overlooking the crashing waves. Setting your horned helmet on the bar, leaning your giant bone sword against the wall. Ringing the tiny bell on the counter. Having the main bartender cat pop his little head up from behind the bar asking you what you'd like to drink and order in the generalized feline language.
>You respond with a few clicks, purrs, and a cheerful meow. The feline slams a hearty wooden mug of their house ale on the bar in front of you. Froth spilling over the sides. A heavier set cat pushes aside the tiny curtain between the back bar area and the kitchen holding a tray of sizzling grilled sardines, roasted vegetables, a bowl of some sort of clear soup, with a soft dinner roll glistening with butter.
>You look behind the stout cat into the kitchen where you see several cats of various sizes and colors bustling in the smokey and steamy kitchen. All wearing bandanas and aprons of various colors and patterns, stained with grease and spills. Hissing and meowing commands at each other. A tabby cat with a bitten off ear standing at the charcoal grill turning fish on skewers. The tuxedo colored cat quickly dicing up onions and carrots on a giant wooden block made from a stump. A team of two charcoal colored cats you can spy out the back manning the giant spit roast over the large hearth, taking turns jumping up and pulling down on the handles to spin the long rod lined with parts of a boar and several whole birds.
There's a very young kitten busting a mean sweat scrubbing various pots and utensils in the wash basin doing his best to keep up with his much older brothers and sisters. Meowing meekly in reply to the harsh hisses of the older cats. Before you can think further of the poor kitten the curtain closes behind the portly tabby and he sets your tray of food down. CONT?

>You look down at your tray of assorted dishes. The trio of skewered sardines rests on a large folded leaf sitting on a raised wooden block. Charred and crispy on the edges with steam rising from the X's slashed in its flesh. You smell at first a strong smoke and oak odor, followed by a slightly sweet tang of the meat, finished by a hint of fresh sea air compounded by the surrounding oceans smashing against the high cliffs. The sardines are caught daily by the locals right off the docks protruding hundreds of feet into the ocean. Which you think of and glance out the fogged glass windows of the bar, looking down the cliffs towards the beach spying the docks lighted up by lanterns with all manner of folks strolling around buying and selling goods and services. The docks serve as this tiny village's night market which is quite renowned, bringing in visitors from all over to eat and drink at the small food stands that dot the docks length. A bright umami smell quickly grabs your attention as you look back down towards your tray. You spy the clear soup, floating in which are chunks of a white fleshed fish, sliced green onions, cubes of tofu, and small shredded pieces of seaweed. It's called night soup on the menu, so not much to go on but you're excited to try. To the left of the bowl sits a small square clay dish with a short pile of various roasted vegetables gleaming with butter and sprinkled with a bit of rock salt. From what you can tell you see; turnips, potatoes, carrots, and a deep purple vegetable you've never seen before, all cut into short irregular rectangles. The last thing you see is a soft looking dinner roll with a pad of butter on top that's slowly dripping down the sides of the bun. You split the bun open in half, hot to the touch and steaming with freshness you take a bite. You're met with an unexpected sweetness, not quite to the point of a dessert but it's definitely not a savory bun, and the butter is quite tangy (like a goat butter?)

>The tangy/sweet light and fluffy bun was surprising but quite refreshing and light. You set the other half of the bun down reaching for your rough looking wooden spoon. (probably hand carved by one of the kitchen hands, and the spoons you can buy down at the goods shops on the docks are of a much higher quality.) you go right for the soup, getting a spoonful of brother first.
>The steaming broth meets your lips after a few blows to cool it down, and what you taste is hard to explain internally let alone if you were to try and tell your friends about it. It's bright and has an almost citrus quality to it, but with a slight fishy taste, but in a good way like fresh raw fish would be. Notes of savory umami immediately come to mind soon afterwards with just a hint of nuttiness like browned butter would be. (internally this makes you feel a little gay, thinking of words like notes and hints and citrus tones with thinking about food.) you continue with the soup trying a spoon of fish with green onion and seaweed on it, the fish is the softest fish you've eaten almost melting in your mouth but at the same time retaining its flaky quality.
>Overall a nice side item for the main event, the sardines. Grabbing your mug and taking a nice long draft of the cold air, refreshing yourself and 'cleansing your palette'(god what a faggot). You let out a big sigh of relief and enjoyment, "ahhhhhh". Wiping the foam from your mouth with your fur and leather arm bracer. You pick up one of the sardines and go straight for the lower belly, your favorite part of grilled fish of any kind really. A salty crunchy skin is what meets you first. Delicious and clean just as expected. The flesh still hot and flaky with a buttery quality to it but not oily like some fish tend to get. You glance at the included side dish of roasted vegetables and push it aside because you are a warrior after all. You think to yourself maybe I should hit the night market after this?

>you finish what's left of your second mug of beer while casually sucking on the leftover fishbones on your plate. Picking your teeth with the rib bones and making light conversation with the bartender cat when he's not busy filling drink orders or helping other patrons. Your feline dialect is pretty rough but you can tell the bartender appreciates the effort in trying since feline isn't an easy language for a human to pick up. You slide your platter and mug towards him indicating you've finished your meal and are ready to pay. He takes your dishes back into the kitchen behind the curtain, he returns with a small decorative tray and with both paws places it in front of you and bows his head. He then tells you the price of your meal and beverage at 11 copper pieces, a good deal for the amount of food and ale consumed. You place your coins on the tray and hand it back to the feline with both hands. He accepts and as is tradition, bows his head for you to pat and rub behind the ears while you purr out a warm thank you and good night.
>you pick up your sword placing it into your back mounted scabbard, and then grab your helmet by one of its chipped horns and head for the door. Pushing open the heavy oak door you step into a crisp breeze of fresh saltwater air. You grew up in a larger village that was much further inland than this coastal quaint town so you immediately become soothed and relaxed from the sea air. They say the waters here carry the spirits of the ocean life. There is a give and take that occurs naturally in these waters. You take from the ocean only that which can be returned in a form of equal or greater value. Sailors that lose their lives at sea are mourned yes but also celebrated for giving their life force back into the ocean to nourish and protect the
sea life. It's a delicate balance that must be maintained and many fishing laws are setup in this area to prevent abuse of the sacred waters. You're comforted by this fact. CONT?

>you pull the fur collar of your short cloak up towards your cheeks to warm up a bit as the night breeze can get a little nippy. Hooking your helmet to the small of your back via a belt, you start making your way towards to grand docks to enjoy the night market. Feeling a little bit intoxicated and in the mood for something stronger than ale you smile softly to yourself thinking "Im in town for a few more days I might as well enioy myself while I'm here."
>The path you need to take winds around the side of the tavern through a moonlit alleyway. In the corner of your eye you spot a small red ember glowing brightly, but you can't see the source of it so you lean forward to investigate. You hear a meak and inquisitive meow come from the shadow. A figure leans forwards slightly revealing a whiskered mouth and nose smoking a small rolled cigarette. He reaches up with his paw and flicks his ash out, stepping forward you're shocked to see the little kitten from before smoking a short cigarette. You squat down to eye level with the little guy and start asking him some questions in feline.
>The little kit is surprised to learn you know feline and informs you that he's on his smoke break and about to end his shift. He wipes sweat from his brow with his little paw, wiping it on his dirty apron. You inquire about his age to which he replies with a sharp meow. "I'm 19 jackass, I'm just the smallest and youngest of my clan." you quickly assure him that you meant no offense. Obviously a little child wouldn't be working a dish pit and smoking, no that would be silly. You tell him that you're planning on going down to the docks for more drinks and if he knows any good food stands or little izakaya shacks to stop at. The kit flicks his cigarette to the cobblestone and tells you to wait here while he finishes his shift up, assuring it would only be minutes. Five minutes later the small tortieshell cat strolls out wearing a small tunic and a leather shoulder purse. CONT?

Similarly: Hardtack. If you make it properly then it should be tough enough to be used as a weapon.

Hardtack

2 cups of all-purpose flour

1/2 to 3/4 cup water (add in as needed)

1 tablespoon lard or Crisco

6 pinches of salt

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

In a large bowl, mix the ingredients together into a stiff dough, knead several times and spread the dough out flat to a thickness of 1/4-inch on a non-greased cookie sheet.

Using a knife, cut dough into 3-inch cracker squares. Using the flat end of wooden skewer, punch four rows of holes, four holes per row, into each cracker, for a total of 16 holes.

Bake for 30 minutes.

Remove from oven, turn crackers over on the sheet and return to the oven and bake another 30 minutes. Cool completely and enjoy.

For longevity return to the oven and bake for an additional 40 minutes, 20 on each side to allow for further drying.
