Ex ALDI employee here. They only ever have 3-5 employees working on any given shift. Usually they put one on the register to start and the rest of the employees do stocking, inventory, ect. When the line on your register goes 2 people past the belt, you call for backup. Then one more employee drops what they’re doing and gets on the next register. They call for backup when their line hits the same margin. Repeat as needed. Regardless the employees are supposed to be fast enough that 3 registers max is all they need. They’re literally timed on every transaction by the register and people get let go if they don’t hit the right numbers.

I think this may be the main reason I hate them. I went there a few weeks ago, the first time in like 20 years I think, because people had told me there is "a lot of foreign food" at Aldi. Pretty small selection. Their vegetables and meats weren't any cheaper or better looking than any where else.
>fuck it, I don't need anything, I'll just go
Except all the fucking tills are closed except the two with 20 people in line. Do they expect people to just wait in line so they can LEAVE? Fuck that, I went to an empty lane and went over the thing they were using to block it with. I hate feeling trapped like that. I guess maybe they have problems with people stealing, so that's why they don't have more tills open probably. But fuck them, never again.

Their "gourmet" pasta sauce is remarkably good, the organic stuff is acceptable for the price. I stock up on their blocks of parmesan too, it's far cheaper and great for grating into sauces. Here the vegetables are superior and cost less than the other supermarkets. Overall I get a few "luxury" things from Aldi and get most other things at other places.

This explains the super-rushy lack of chitchat. I hate Aldi compared to Publix service. And, as a one stop shopping, it'll never be enough for me. I can't do their meat dept items, which are all rough edged machine sliced looking, dark looking pork only, and it scares me.

I love the price for baby cukes and some of the produce is just extremely nice and local. Breads are awesome, from their big round one that makes amazing toast, to sourdough, flatbreads, and the excellent stollen at Christmastime.

I usually go in there for the Savoritz cracker assortment box, some cheese and salami, crudite veggies or a bag of fruit, knopper cookies, and something seasonal, like pumpkin spice iced coffees in a 4 pack, or spiced cider, or dipped gingerbread.

Nope. Publix is only like 2 people in line max, and the service is excellent.
