I get my meat from a student run butcher shop. The animals are kept literally across the street next to the lab I work at. Locally sourced, pastured cattle. You can't support a metropolitan area on that, but it certainly works for this college town. One asshole said they'd rather see the land used to grow vegetables. Like the field down the road? No, that doesn't count apparently. These kids have no idea how large farming land is. They've maybe only seen a corn/soy field by the road.

It would be nice if a vegan or two could admit that not all farms are battery or factory farms. Even from where you live currently you could look online, drive out to a farm, meet the cow you'd likely buy, and get a quarter or half of it to keep in your freezer. Might take a few hours, but that's months of ethically sourced quality food. It's better for the environment and the animals. It's also not that much more expensive at the end of the day. If you don't want to learn how to butcher it, you can spend money to have a trained butcher do the cuts for you. This is what I did when I lived in Chicago. Yes, I had a chest freezer in my small apartment. It was in the dining area.

There are options. One can, with a bit of effort, eat meat without supporting factory and battery farming. But every time I bring this up vegans say it's not good enough, even though they've probably never visited a farm, only seen exploitation videos about factory farms.

Cooking vegetables properly won't increase their protein content enough to take the place of meat. That's the reason for plant protein, because even beans which are usually called a protein still only have like 1/3 the protein of meat.
