I sear them in a regular old frying pan until they're a bit crispy and blistery. I toast the hot dog buns a bit so they're just a bit crispy and warm. Then I top it off with relish and mustard. That's how I like them.

Whichever cooking method you use, this is the correct result. The only time a hotdog belongs in a simmering pot is if it's for beanies & weanies. Boiling(and even steaming) the things leeches the flavor out of them. You may as well just trot down to the hot dog factory and ask for a milkshake cup of emulsion without any of the seasonings added yet. After that is mustard, and be fucked if you try to add ketchup. For spicier hotdogs, it also doesn't hurt to shake some ground cayenne on.

Boiled. Everything else is optional. The only reason to ever get a hotdog is if you want to boil a sausage. It's the only option that tastes fine boiled. Want to grill a sausage? Every other option is better for grilling.

Personal favorite here
>split dog down middle
>sear on both sides till nicely browned
>caramelized onions
>toasted bun (split top is the go to)
And the real star topping
>squirt of canola on the flat top
>sprinkle shredded bag mozzarella over the oiled pan
>once browned use a spatula to lay it browned side up on the top of the dog
A man in a lunch truck once asked me if I wanted this on my dog and it changed my life. I eat it with a tiny line of ketchup, but only because I feel mustard would contrast too sharply with the other toppings. For a non special occasion dog I enjoy sauerkraut and stadium/spicy mustard. If that gets upgraded to a braut then I put on some horseradish too

The best way to cook a hot dog is on a grill. The second best way is split down the middle then pan fried in butter until browned.

First, bring a pan of beer and onions with whatever spices you want to a simmer (NOT a boil) over an open fire. Put your hotdogs in, and let them simmer for 10 minutes or so.
Then take them out and put them over the coals until they're blistered and the skin is getting crispy.
Take them off, put in a soft and fluffy hotdog bun with a squiggle of mustard (optional), and there you have a perfect campfire dog.

Is this actually a thing people do with hotdogs?

I split my hotdogs lengthwise before pan frying them, but I put them into a regular bun and don't keep it flat like this picture. I couldn't even find any results on google to see if it had a proper name, but my mom used to always do it growing up.

For toppings, I go with chili and diced onions below the dog, then cheese and ketchup on top, then I season with pepper and old bay. Inb4 why Old Bay, I’m a Baltipoor fag so I can’t help it.
