There are bad indian restaurants and there are good indian restaurants. Ask indians (who've actually lived in India) what restaurant they would recommend.

Some people will, ofc, not enjoy Indian cuisine this is both normal and fine. Don't force yourself. But from what you described it sounds to me like you've been to a crappy place.

If you like rice dishes I would recommend biryanis. If you like stews and don't like too hot food, I would recommend korma. If you like hot stews, I would recommend southern curries and/or vindaloos. If you like meat check out the keema or the indian (or pakistani) kebab. If you like fish, try souther fish dishes - be it curry or biryani or simpler dishes. Also, if you like seafood, generally, check out sri lankan food and Maldivian cuisine.

If you don't like the cuisines stop forcing yourself, but try to make sure you've tried the good stuff before giving up.

I know of two peak level indian restaurants in Berlin, that are just 10 meter away from each other, competing about who's the best of these two. Their prices are generally by a good margin more expensive than their counterparts, but their quality of food and also hygiene is top level.

BUT, i know a lot of indian restaurants i wouldn't set my foot into. And generally seen, here in Germany most restaurants that get in trouble for bad hygiene are either fast food restaurants or restaurants from darkskinlers not willing/able to follow basic hygiene standards required. So this is also a fact.
The risk of getting dirty food in a typical german restaurant is generally lower than if you buy at a lebanese, indian or chinese restaurant.
Just look at their homecountries and the hygiene followed there. And you have an idea how much hygiene is prioritized on average.
Some adopt to what is required here, and some don't and get caught sooner or later.
