So generally a lot of people seem to think single malt is better than blended.

Is that true?

>> No.12452444

It's not a stupid question since it's the public opinion single malt is better than blended.

>> No.12452460

>>12452439
Blended is better. It's been taste tested and tweaked for a consistent brand flavor or for what was missing.
If they manage to make the damn thing without blending and it came out delicious it's a rare thing that is a miracle. Let's pay more for that. So to answer your question, many people think single malt is better because it costs more. Adulterating something natural at the end seems like tainting it, but it's just standard practice. A little bit of the old aged stuff from that 30+ barrel does add good smoothness right at the end.

Shop your own palate, and not the label. If drinking whisky is some religious experience for you, and you want to think of the miraculousness and skill of a producer to have made something perfect 12 years ago, buy what you want. There are more expensive past times than $15 servings of alcohol as you decant that zomg $150 bottle at home. Big whoop, it's the same price some bars will charge for a glass of well swill. It's all relative. Enjoy your life!

I'm actually a fan of Jameson a lot of the time, minus the smoke, minus the peat, plus the sherry and wood sugar smoothness, tyvm, It's delicious aged 12-18 or more!

>> No.12452468

>>12452450

Public opinion can duck my fucking cock. Just to break it down, since you seem to struggle with simple concepts: some single malts are cheap and bad. Some blended whiskey is not cheap and not bad.

In general, expensive whiskey is better than cheap whiskey. Blended/single malt is a matter of personal choice.

>> No.12452808

>>12452439
Generally blended is made to be smooth and easy drinking. Good if thats what you want. Single malt is generally made to display specific flavors like peat or smoke or honey or whatever. Good if you like subtle nuances or just analyzing flavors. There are obvious exceptions to the rule.

>> No.12452851

>>12452444
This. It entirely depends on the quality involved with the blend and the single malt being talked about. In my opinion there are a lot worse blends then single malts but lately the number of craft single malts coming around has skewed this argument a lot.

Also >>12452460 what most people don't get is that "single malt" is almost always a vatting of barrels that were made at the distillery and may have differing profiles based on the distillation run, yeast affect on the wash and the specific cask used. Unless it's a single cask then it follows that argument, however single casks are always monitored until they get to a desired profile that the distillery manager likes.
Also smoothness is a buzzword that means nothing. Adding a 30 year old barrel in the mix that's still rough won't change the mouthfeel of the blend, especially if it's just a teaspoon which most distilleries do that claim that a $30 blend contains some 25 year old whisky. Look at JW Blue Label, that shit isn't smooth at all when it basically tastes like burnt cereal.

>> No.12454382

If you want to be able to get the full picture of the differences from single malts from different regions of Scotland then go for single malts. There is nothing wrong with blended malts however single malts will show you the true characteristics of that region. With blended malts the distilleries will try and be consistent year on year with what they are producing.

Single malt IS blended. It does not mean the same thing as single cask. You have no idea what you are talking about.
Single malt just means:
>it came out of a single distillery
>it only uses malted barley
That's it. Even a scotch with an age statement (like 12 year) just means that the youngest whisky in the blend cannot be any younger than the year on the bottle. That means a 12 year might contain some 15 year and so on. In other words, the age statement is a minimum age requirement.
Even if you had a single malt whisky that was 99% 18 years old, if you added one drop of 12 year to it, it legally becomes a 12 year single malt whisky. Further, if you were to add whisky from another distillery down the road, then it would become a blended malt whisky.

That depends on the whiskey in question. An inconsistent, or just generally awful single malt is going to be worse than a blend that's carefully matched for a consistent high quality. Singles tend to be held in higher regard due to the increased difficulty of making a consistently good product, and actually are ultimately more "characteristic" when they're treated with the same care as blends. My preferred Scotches are single malts, but I also like cheap Johnnie Walker and Jameson.

Regional terroir doesn’t exist for scotch, the only difference will be on the basis of the still shape affecting the distillate character. Most distilleries use the same source for malted barley and warehouse their whisky in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, etc. so they’re almost always very similar. A Speyside like Benriach that’s peated can be easily mistaken for a Springbank or even a Ledaig even by experienced whisky drinkers. Only very few single malts carry distinct profiles across many different releases but that’s more prevelant with Islay whiskies that use their own peat bogs and systems that shape the smoke profile to be more medicinal, campfire, meaty, salty, etc. Whisky regions in general are purely geographic and aren’t a good indicator of style across an entire region given the changes in the industry where some Islay makers do unpeated whisky that could taste like a Lowland and some Lowlands could peat their whisky to taste like an Islay.
If you want an idea of provenance in Whisky look into Waterford in Ireland as they’re actually trying to experiment with crop and season differences with barley as well as yeast interactions and barreling.

Absolutely based, it's expensive but I haven't regretted it at all. It really is unlike any other peat monster I've ever had

Love Laphroaig Quarter Cask. One of the very few I will always have in the house.

I found Jack Daniel's on sale today. Actually never had the stuff before.
It's terrible. I can't even have this in my coffee. I went out and bought some cola to see if it worked as a mix with that and I guess it's passable, but I believe I'll just gift the bottle to someone with no taste. It is a nice bottle, though. I wonder if this piss only sells because of that.

Do you smokehounds drink your peated peats during the warmer months wherever you are?
I live in a tropical country and, though I'm intrigued by peaty scotch, I'm more than a little put off by it in this humid heat, AC or no it makes little difference.
It feels to me that it would be a better drink around a cozy fire with a cold rain or snow or fog or some shit outside the window.

Absolutely. Peated scotch obviously go well with the cooler days but for me, no matter how the weather is, drinking peated stuff always makes me feel like I'm in that relaxed state like I would be in front of a camp fire minus the heat. I do drink the fruity or sherry whiskies too and I do like them but nothing really does compare to pouring out some Octomore, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg or Talisker or any other peaty scotches, recently found Caol Ila and gonna get a bottle asap.

I live in a tropical country where we are going through some heatwaves but still had to replace my Talisker and Laphroaig recently

It definitely is better suited for cold weather, yeah, but I drink it all year.
