pigs are actually very clean animals. The stereotype comes from them not having sweat glands so when it is hot it is spreading liquid over their body- or die. If you give them a nice pond of clean water they will with pleasure use it. But if nothing else is there they have no choice but use their excrements. Also mud helps against nasty insects.
