"When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Jove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger."

I agree that the prose gets too purple some of the time but I also feel that it fits the characters and stories he's usually portraying, so it ends up working decently.
As I said already; it's fine for reading on a flight.
I would not want to spend an entire day at the library reading it "seriously", though.

Short stories in general feel best suited for flying if you ask me.
Read "State of the Art" by pic related last time I went flying. Pretty fun and low effort read.

What made me fall in love with his writing was this passage from The Shunned House:

"We were not, as I have said, in any sense childishly superstitious, but scientific study and reflection had taught us that the known universe of three dimensions embraces the merest fraction of the whole cosmos of substance and energy. In this case an overwhelming preponderance of evidence from numerous authentic sources pointed to the tenacious existence of certain forces of great power and, so far as the human point of view is concerned, exceptional malignancy."

This is where he shined, a sense of horror evoked from a purely scientific perspective. Refreshing when most horror deals with supernatural nonsense that doesn't hold up to examination.

Somehow, he evokes feelings of horror through extremely formal and adjective-laden prose. I think it's the contrast between style and subject that does it. It's addicting (for me).
