Hey all,

my current living situation does not allow for me to have a lot of pots and pans (I only have one cabinet in the place I'm renting) and it's mostly full already with dishes and such, so I bought a crockpot and meal prep containers and I've been doing shredded chicken + rice + brocolli for the past few weeks, it's been really great experimenting with the recipe and such but it's getting kinda boring and like to spice it up.

Tl;Dr please give me some cool meal preppable recipes or ideas that I can make with only a crockpot and microwave (and normal utensils ie knife / cutting board etc)

Was thinking of doing a chipotle bowl style thing next. Black beans, chicken, corn, onions (fajitas?) some lettuce and salsa packed into containers for the week.

No. The cabinet is unfortunately really shallow so it'd have to be really small to even fit vertically. That's LA for you I guess lol. Hope I can move out and get my own place and kitchen soon but for now I'm stuck. I guess I could leave the pan in my room but honestly I've been perfectly happy with my crockpot cooking because I can quickly make food for a whole week in a couple hours and I don't have to look after it.

I'm a single bloke and live in a one-bed flat, most of my meals are batch cooked.

I often make a large pot with fresh produce, have a decent meal, then freeze the remainder in plastic trays like yours. In my freezer at present I have; Chicken curry; Beef, Green peppers and black bean sauce; Spag Bol and and a Thai type red curry, that I nuke in the Microwave and add a small tin of sardines.
Usually most of the time I use Microwave rice too.

I discovered this youtube channel recently that shows all kinds of large scale meal preparations (for freezing purposes) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdouibA_pnEMuTY8BY_Ur5Q I guess some of the things you can also do with your limited setup.
If you have a kettle then some things can be prepared this way too, just google around a bit. There are people who cook complete meals in kettles. And maybe in the future something like an Instant pot might be useful for you? Normally I would recommend anyone a normal pressure cooker but if you have such a limited space then having a device that can be used for several different things is more useful I guess.

What if you cooked a 3 or 4 different meals at the same time, and alternated them throughout the week?
You could change the meals every week so you'd only repeat them a few times.
Hell, if your freezer is big enough you could even cook double the amount so they'd last you two weeks (but you'd still cook every week) and you'd have double the dishes to alternate from.
And you can use different condiments on each one so they would never even taste the same.
Many preppers have plans where they cook several different ingredients that go well with each other then mix and match them in different combinations to get different dishes with a limited amount of ingredients.
There are so many ways to work around this, it's not even a problem.

Besides, this isn't done to enjoy food (but it's still more enjoyable than fucking fast food).
It's done for practicality (it's x10 more practical than any fast food on every standpoint).

If all you care about is taste, then this isn't for you.
A lot of people are willing to lose a bit in taste for all the other advantage, so it's the best option for them.

Yes that's why I always leave the broth from my shredded chicken in. Leaves it nice and juicy. Need to try curry sometime.

I've done some pre cooked / microwaved veggies before, definitely saves time. I'm also dieting and going to the gym a lot though, that's one of the main reasons I took this up in the first place so I'll have to skip the bacon though. Definitely want to try some different veggies in the future. Looking at maybe stir fry veggie mixes, those have a lot or variation in them. Could be good

I love my crockpot. I love throwing hunks of meat into it and coming home after work and smelling how amazing my dinner's gonna be.

Here are some that I like:

Whole chicken + cream of mushroom + cream of chicken = Toss everything into pot, turn dial to low and cook for 6-8 hours. Served over white rice, it keeps in the freezer well if you wanna save some.

Pork shoulder roast + carrots + onions + taters = Heavily season pork, add two cups water, cook on low for 6-8 hours. Baste every few hours if you can.

Beef Stroganoff: Cheap chunks of beef + Onions + Mushrooms + Garlic and Herbs + beef broth = Serve over egg noodles. Freezes wonderfully.

Doesn't it bother you that the smell of food goes in the entire house and sticks to things like clothes, curtains, couchs, etc?

Depends on how much you care about the food, friend. I only care about the macros. Here's my weekly setup. I have a rather large old crockpot.
>10lbs chicken breast
>soy sauce
>orange juice
>some oil if the chicken breast wasn't trimmed
>let sit for any amount of time over 6hrs.
I've literally had this on low for 2 days straight and just grabbed out of the pot, be warned that the chicken gets very very dry. I go to town with 2 forks and shred it and let it sit, such that it absorbs all of the juices. As for a carb source, I made a slop out of sweet potatos and oats. I put in around 10lbs of sweet potatos and 3-4 cups of oats, put like half an inch of water in the bottom and let it sit on low for a day. Mush it up into sweet orange gruel and add plenty of salt. Eat an amount of this daily that fits your weight loss/gain goals, then go squat.

I've never ever met an indian in my life, nor came in close proximity of Indian food, so I have no idea what you're talking about (aside from what I've read online).
All I know is that whenever there's a strong smell of any food, any kind of cloth or porous material in the room (or any room with an open door) will absorb that smell.
It's usually not that strong, but day after day it adds up.
Especially fried food.

It's like a heavy smoker's house. As soon as you get in, there's this smell of cigarettes that permeates everything, even when nobody has smoked in it for days, and all his clothes smell fo smoke even when he doesn't realize it.

Northern Italy.
The Indian community is mostly concentrated in another city (Bergamo), so I think that's why there aren't many in my city.
Also I'm a recluse neet, so I don't meet many people in general.

Nevermind, I was wrong:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indians_in_Italy
It's not concentrated in Bergamo but a big chunk of them in in the Lombardy region (which Bergamo is in).
But my region isn't one of those with the highest concentrations anyway, so yeah, there aren't that many where I live.

Meh. You ain't missing out on much. Like I said, the "food-stank" in Indian and African/Sudanese/Ethiopian households is super intense. It's in their pores, it's in their hair, their breath, their clothes, their car, their furniture and probably even wallpaper.

I live in a cold place, so coming back to a warm home that smells like crockpot food is amazing. It's not like the smell/food particles stay around after it's cleaned up and put away. I mean, you're not using a crockpot like this every single day, so here's not much opportunity to have it permanently perfume your house.

I suggest that you've never tried it, you give it a shot. You may surprise yourself.

Why is that?
What's the difference between them and other people who don't have that "food-stank"?
Is it really just that they have smellier food?

You know, I honestly couldn't tell you why this is. I have a theory that because they are poor third world countries, the majority of the food is poor quality and the best way to make trash taste less like trash is to over-spice the hell out of it and drown out any funky flavors. Thus the obscene amounts of spice-stank.

I'm the son of Arab immigrants in Europe and I'm very aware of this, as I would even get taunted about it (wasn't very severe, just there weren't many other immigrants in our school).
By what I've gathered from my own family and the other ones I've beein in contact with, it's a mix of factors:

- The food has a much stronger smell than European food.
I can't elaborate on why because each food is different, but I've noticed that on average it does.

- Usually poor so they don't have a hood and the smell propagates throughout the house instead of being aspirated.

- Usually have poor hygene, so the food smell that sticks to them doesn't get washed away from their skin/hair/clothes/etc as well.

- Related to the above but, usually not very conscious of smells. Europeans care about smelling fresh but in my experience Arabs only care about not smelling extremely bad (being sweaty after a workout warrants a shower, but if there aren't super strong smells you're fine even fi you haven't showered for a few days). As long as you (or your clothes) don't smell too bad, it's not important to smell positively good. Neutral is fine.
They often don't use fabric softener so their clothes don't have that "clean smell" but instead smells like their house, which smells of food for the abovementioned reasons.

- They're usually stupid so they do things just to do them instead of to achieve a goal.
For example, they don't shower to remove the filth that's accumulated on their skin. They shower to "achieve clean status" like in a videogame, so no matter what, if they had a shower not too long ago, they think they're clean.
>"what do you mean I smell bad? I showered yesterday" "so what that I've worked 8 hours at the restaurant? I still have the anti-smell shield provided by the shower enchantment I did yesterday!"

Obviously this isn't all Arabs, and the more integrated in western culture they are (and the higher the social class), the less this applies.

Its ventilation.
Those areas are generally pretty poor.
Means less square area of household, and less windows, because they drive up the cost of building.
Rarely have higher ceiling either.
Or central air.
Same thing for white trash in trailers, they stink like cigarette smoke because they sit in it all day with no ventilation.

Most people here live in relatively small apartments with no ventilation, and they don't smell.
In fact, I live in a real estate development where several buildings have the same floor plan, so thousands of people have the same ventilation situation, and only people from those countries have that food smell.

I'm sorry not all of us can have mommy make us fresh tendies all the time, some of us actually have to go to work for eight hours or more a day and so it's bring your own food or eat outside, which is more expensive and possibly less healthy.

anyway OP maybe try making stew. also braised meat etc are breddy good and easy to make in a crockpot
