there's a bunch of russian restaurants in brighton beach, just east of coney island. family went to tatiana's last summer and just about everything was really good. khachapuri, which is georgian cheese bread, vareniki with potato and another with cheese and pelmeni with pork and veal were all happily consumed by everyone.

There's a Russian bakery in town that makes chebureki. Nothing wrong with a deep fried meat pocket half the size of your head.

It's on state street, and it's one of the only really reliable late night good cheap food options in downtown. it's open til like 2:30am (used to be later) and has only two things on the menu (beef dumplings, veg dumplings). they're pretty damn tasty. Vodka as we know it today was invented by a Russian IN Russia. Earlier version of Vodka (the polish one you're referring to) did not use the distilation process but was rather just fermented wheat - roughly the alcohol content of wine(14 percent) - so not Vodka at all. Pelmeni were essentially brought on by Chinese merchants to the caucassus region and eventually made their way into Russia and got popular because of the easy preservation method of the food.
