not a new yorker and i've never had a new york pizza

but cheese pizzas are fucking based. i always order them to determine if i like the crust, sauce, and cheese quality. if they can't get that right, then all i'm buying the pizza for is the meat and vegetables toppings. at that point, i might as well just order a supreme salad or something.

Unironically jews. The Jews work closely with the Italians since they run delis, and the pizza bagels that resulted from those close working relationships try to sell a pizza that costs the absolute least to produce, hence the thin crust, minimal sauce and only a pittance of cheese.

I've been told it was the water my whole life as well. Supposedly it's because the islands NYC is situated on act as a giant mineral filter that purifies the water and gives it a unique flavor profile.

Had it before in NYC, pretty damn good. Great texture on the dough, crisp and chewy. Good sauce to cheese ratio, personally I don’t like a whole lot of sauce on there. Just a little to give you that hit of sweet acidic tomato flavor. They actually do make it with toppings, I had a simple pepperoni slice but they also sold supreme and cheese by the slice and you could order whole pies with basically any toppings you want.

One very big contributing factor is the water, which also makes for extremely delicious NYC bagels. Someone tried opening a pizza shop that had some sort of extremely expensive water system set up to mimic NYC water in the Connecticut suburbs. Their pizza was good, but it was unaffordable for the owner.

Let's be real here, nostalgia.

Cheese slices are traditionally way cheaper than regular slices. People associate their "favorite" or "best tasting" with the thing they just happen to be near their job/school/commute.

low and behold, the cheapest item on the menu is delicous otherwise it would destroy the ego of their childhood.

Another arguement is if their is any barometer to measure how good a pizza place is, a cheese pizza is a good control unit. Im highly suspicous of people who dont praise pizzerias for their toppings though. What you would usually find is those places that make decent cheese pizzas, use the same shlock of peppornis or wet stale mushrooms as everyone else.

Their is alot of pizza in nyc. but their is also a lot of bad pizza in NYC and I would reckon if you would to just walk around and go to those cheap dollar pizza joints more than 50 percent of the time its no more better than a chucky cheese pizza.

That being said, if you do a quick google search your probably only a 20 min walk to better than above average pizza where its obvious they spend a bit more time on the sauce, cheese, and actually cook the bottom of the damn pizza to not be a floppy mess. you will also notice the toppings are either house made ( as in roasted or pickled) or they buy the better tier of toppings.

Their is a lot of italians in new york, just by chance their will be a lot of good pizza. But don't fall for the hype that all the pizza is good, just their is a lot of good pizza

bruno's in clifton, mancinis in montclair (their brooklyn based), pizza town makes a MEAN cheese pizza (their calzones are low key the best), brooklyn pizza in edgewater (with a ridgewood location), etc etc

these are all DIFFERENT style pizzas ( by the slice, woodfire, and coal) and are all extremely good.
