I think another factor is that MREs at this point have had enough time and money invested in them that there's no excuse for them to not be good. The idea that rations should be nutritionally balanced and pleasing to eat was literally invented during WW2 so it's more understandable if a ration from that era or just after isn't very good, but at this point, nations have spent 50+ years making "good" rations so there's 0 justification for fucking it up

I ate MREs constantly for 10 years in the US Army Infantry. And the last time I had one was in the US Army Infantry. I die quite happy if I never eat another for the rest of my life. It's shit food for people with shitty taste buds.
