one time I bought a 4 pack of these, went home and drank them in about 3 hours, then went back to the liquor store visibly drunk and got another 4 pack.
the same cashier was still there and didn't say anything. she even had to get manager approval because apparently they have a system that notifies them if the same debit card is used in multiple transactions per day.
then i went home and drank two more. it was so acidic that i accidentally burped and threw up a little bit like a little baby

Belgian brewery from the Ardennes region, not too far from Luxemburg. Formerly called Brasserie de la Bastogne, now Brasserie Minne I think.

no, of course not, but it is the most California of places, you cannot judge the state without primarily considering its main metro region. You simply cannot consider yourself a top tier beer state when your largest, most important and most iconic city is a mid-low tier beer city. San Diego is great of course, if all of California was like SD it would have a decent argument of being a top tier beer state, but its still quite disheartening to see how few people are into craft beer in a city with as many good breweries as San Diego, its just not a great culture and local stores and restaurants do a pretty bad job taking advantage of the local beer scene

It's a matter of the large beer distributors muscling out small, high quality breweries. Their mental health issues are not my concern.
If something has neither national nor (my) regional distribution, it doesn't matter to me how good it is at the source. I'm not at that source. I'll stick to what is made here in my town, or at least brought here professionally; and not worry about the state of my beer life list.

Drink Local is a respectable philosophy. But whether you're in Austin, Phoenix, Richmond, Philadelphia, Portland, Columbus, Salisbury, Canton, Chantilly, or Rochester, it's likely that the best stuff is sold direct to customer at the brewery rather than distributed. You can always cop your local fire and trade it to others for out of market stuff. That's how I manage to get Trillium, 450 North, Burley Oak, Treehouse, Aslin and Hudson Valley cans out here on the west coast even though none of these are distributed.

I find that there is a place for both! Classic belgian lambics, gueuze and krieks are very traditional, but still very complex. But you usually know what you're getting into, so I usually pair it with food and use it in cooking.

American (and in general non-belgian) wild ales / sours are usually more experimental and diverse, adding everything you can think of to the fermentation. Its apple and oranges for me, but I find myself re-buying high quality belgian lambics more often than I do american wild ales.

I also really enjoy the blending process, making each batch of the same beer often wildly different. For example my favorite lambic is 3 fonteinen Armand & Gaston, which differs based on what year batches are blended, while most wild ales are pretty one note once you've had one. Doesnt mean its worse or better, but its two different styles.

there is a natural evolution of the palate when it comes to beer.

typically people start with light beer when underaged and in college. it's cheap and gets you drunk. natty lite, keystone, etc.

then you're introduced to hoppy beer. much more flavor, often inconsistent because of freshness because you buy at the supermarket or liquor stores that store beer warm and/or sell old beer. stuff like lagunitas ipa, sierra nevada.

then you transition to darker beers that have better shelf stability because they're new and are more reliably tasty. reds, browns, stouts, porters.

after a while you realize hoppy beer is dependent on freshness and you go back to IPA/pale ales. this time you drink locally, often from the source. you know that if it's brewed nearby it's likely fresher. fresh hoppy beer = better, pretty much always.

eventually you discover barrel aged beers. bourbon barrel aged strong ales (barleywine, RIS, quad), and sourts (fruited first, then funky). these are regarded as the pinnacle of beer.

finally you realize that well-made, fresh lager is the most satisfying. you will drink hoppy beer often and the barrel aged stuff every once in a while (it becomes cost prohibitive, and is mood dependent).

usually folks transition to spirits or some other type of liquor around this point.

you can see how far along a person is in their beer journey using this quick guide. often people don't care to advance, or get stuck on some of these steps because they are stubborn or don't have access to good variety/fresh beer.

Except when your customer doesn't give half a fuck about "simple" styles and only comes to your brewery to drink the fire haze and barrel aged stouts that you do better than anyone else in the region. There's a reason why most of today's top tier craft breweries don't produce a core pils or lager and only bring these out once or twice per year. They just don't sell and they're not what craft customers want to see. Nobody's losing their mind and driving hundreds of miles to cop a Great Notion pils, and the brewery knows this.
Places that do what you say and produce beer for casuals are not catering to their core audience, but the guy who gets dragged along to the brewery with his IPA loving buddies. See pic related.

Am I the only one sickened at the attempt to invoke FDR as if he didn't sell the entire population of this country into debt slavery?

>dark beer
That's a huge category with a lot of variance. I'll describe a few styles.
>russian imperial stouts
The biggest difference is that you'll get a lot more roasty flavors. Think black coffees, dark chocolate, an almost "burnt" flavor. Once you get past that, there's some incredible malt complexity to be had. They do tend to be more heavily hopped (so you'll probably see IBUs in the 60-90 range) than lighter styles, but that's really only to balance out the insane amount of residual sugars that end up floating around in the glass. The style holds up very well to adjuncts and barrel aging, so a lot of American brewers heavily experiment with it. Good starter stouts: Bell's Expedition Stout, Founders Breakfast Stout, SN Narwhal
>Belgian quadrupel
Probably the apex of non-sour Belgian brewing. Some of the most complex and interesting beers are found in this style. Lots of dark fruit, yeast esters, spices, and very well hidden alcohol. Hop presence is generally lite and for balancing purposes only: the yeast and malt are the star of the show here. Plenty of top-tier quads are readily available in the states. Thank the Catholics. Good quads: Rochefort 10, St. Bernardus Abt. 12, Weyerbacher Blasphemy (barrel aged but god-tier if you can find it)
>doppelbock
By far the best of the German lagers. Thick, heavy malt, almost syrupy, yet still has that "clean" lager characteristic. Very bready, sweet, and boozy. Probably the most beginner friendly out of the styles here. Good ones to try are Ayinger, Aventinus, and Troegenator.

There's a lot more, and its a wonderful rabbit hole to go into. Explore!

I threw breakfast stout in their for two reasons. A, it's reasonably tasty and easy to get your hands on no matter where you are in the country. B, it highlights how a lot of brewers like to play with adjuncts in their stouts. C, I'm halfway through a four pack of DIPA and fuck your autism, negro.

I'm in Toronto and sour beers with added shit are definitely becoming the biggest fad here along with general flavored ales. I personally like Flanders red ales but not a lot of breweries here do that style. Recently I see a lot more "session sours" which have shockingly low ABVs, one of them was 2.4%, which are mostly drunk by women and soibois.
