>lodge realizes people are retarded and will never season their pans
>lodge changes the molds to make the surface of the pans to be course so the factory seasoning sticks better

Millenials are the ones who use cast iron the most because it's so rustic and authentic and shit. Everyone who has a brain put their cast iron pans in the garbage long ago, stainless steel is infinitely superior in every single way. Only redditors, nu males and trannies still use cast iron

I actually bought a lodge combo cooker to bake bread in. It was recommended by the very best home bread making literature available and it does churn out flawless loaves. I've only used the skillet part of it twice and the food didn't stick, and I never applied any oil to it.

its literally what they did. They changed the molds so the factory "season" would stick to it. Now the pans suck ass and you have to modify them to get them to be as good as "grandmas old pan"

cooking in cast iron will see fat go into the pores in the pan, leveling them out over time

i dump oil onto a paper towel and rub my cast iron with it after ever cook
certain shit will still stick but cast iron is objectively better for a whole lot of shit

I don't know, if you enjoy the seasoning autismo that comes with cast iron go for it. It's also cheaper so if you are poor get one I guess otherwise stainless steel is better
>>11773549
It was a masculine thing but nu males and soys have ruined it and with steaks they have ruined cast iron. The almost sexual, faux masculine rage redditors enter when discussing steaks has put a stigma on it forever. That's why some meat afficionados (myself included) have put steak to the side and learned to enjoy superior meat and poultry such as duck and lamb.
When I see a cast iron pan I see re ddit, as simple as that, I see faux masculinity and lack of cooking knowledge, I see a mustache twirling twink praising the 'heat retention' and how they only season beef with 'salt and pepper' religiously as some kind of pavlovian response at the sight of a ribeye.

>> No.11773670

how are you preventing the seasoning from filling in the roughness in the surface and turning it into a nice smooth surface? are you washing it with soap or some shit? my nu-lodge only took a few days to get nearly as smooth as the Wagner I bought at Academy in 1986.

>> No.11773675

Can't it be, possibly, that every single guide back then, and even some today, will tell you to scour the pan with steel wool and other very powerful abrasive tools in order to remove impossibly stuck bits and pieces off any pan but especially cast iron? Wouldn't that even be likely considering the level of information and general home cook knowledge forty years ago? What are the odds that the older pans you encountered were simple scoured smooth with prolonged use?

>> No.11773688

no lodge use to machine the pans at the factory to a smooth finish
>>11773670
How about instead of making an inferior pan they just machine the thing like they used to.

Not only is my nu-lodge a pile of shit that has food stick to it religiously. I have seasoned it multiple times , with different season techniques. Each failing miserably.

The fact of the matter is the surface is not smooth enough for cooking

I agree with you. I got super mad every time I cooked with my memelodge pan.

I found a Threshold brand skillet at a Marshalls which had a very smooth pre-seasoning. I never had problems. Now I tell everyone to get a pan that is smooth as possible. Any bumps or rough surface means it will inveritably suuuck to cook on. Friends of mine who don't listen to me basically cooks and burns shit to the bottom - leaves the shit on the bottom of the pan unwashed, unscrapped. And literally makes it "non-stick" by leaving old crusty food residue on the bottom of lodge pans to get the smooth texture. Disgusting.

>> No.11775510

Even some of the cast iron fags in this thread are acting retarded. Proper seasoning doesn't 'fill in' the sand mould grain. Watch how a wok is seasoned. Cast iron is the same principle. (flax) oil polymerizes with the metal and forms a thin coating when heated over its smoke point.

Its true tho. The market has changed and the demand is up for useless sticky pans because when redditors finally sand their pans and do all the season autism required to make them somehow functional they feel an unrivaled bliss and sense of superiority and can finally claim to have mastered the cast iron ritual which by the time they finally achieve it will be called 'the easiest thing ever' and they'll humble brag that 'even a caveman can do it' while being aware that it's a pointless pain in the ass that has no advantages over stainless steel other than making them feel 'friggin superior'.
To sum it up, redditors want non functional pans they can tinker with endlessly to feel better about themselves
