The local trade school is starting a butcher program. Is this a good jerb? I'm always happiest when working with food but I have no interest in working in a restaurant. Not looking to get rich btw.

No clue why but they get all kinds of weird growths and shit.

I asked this because if you're recently out of high school (18-20), you should just suck it up, go to traditional uni, get a stem degree, have a decent paying job/career, and cook for fun.

I regret not getting a useful degree every day.

before going to a butcher program, you could reach out to butchers in the area, tell them you're interested, see if you could get some kind of mentor/apprenticeship type of deal. then you can get paid to learn.

only way I'd do a butcher program is if 1) there was no way to get a decent kind of butcher job without it or 2) the program has relationships with quality employs and will place students into the best butcher jobs available.

if you're making $14/hr several years down the road you might regret being a butcher.

if you're deadset on working with your hands, be a plumber like the other dude said, or electrician, etc.

not caring about being rich is one thing, but you still wanna be able to buy a house, etc.

please take my advice im a 28 year old fuckup. would love to be 22 again

Worth it if they'll help set you with serious employers after you graduate. Not worth it if all you're going to do us work at the supermarket meat counter.
A buddy of mine who cooks at a big hotel is going to butcher school on the company's dime because they decided they wanted an in-house butcher at their next hotel.

butchers are usually on commission instead of wage or salary, so if you're good you'll make bank, if you're bad you're wasting your time. I'd recommend apprenticeship for sure if you can get it, both to make sure you love the work and to get the best skills possible. remember to sharpen everything, not just your knife

your going to regret it unless you have some entrepreneurial skill to get into the trading and distribution in the butcher business or open up a butcher shop ( with capitol you dont have cause of shitty pay) your always going to be mr 14$ an hour. sure it seems fun and cool now and your romanticizing it but nothing is fucking fun about packing porkchops into plastic trays when your 37. If you dont know what you want to do with your life just go to school with something REMOTELY marketable like accounting, programming, engineering, biochem, or hell even film/digital marketing if your into that sort of thing. THEN take those useful skills and find out what you wanna do.

I mean for fucks sake a butcher. Not even mexicans are butchers where I live, Its all central Americans trying to get buy , black or white guys with a record that can't do anything better, or occasionally a student paying through school who used to work at the cashier.

One of my co-workers would highly disagree with you. His previous job was as a plumber and he told me 'When the economy was doing good, I was doing good. When the economy went bad, I was living from pay check to pay check.' Plumbing SIN'T recession proof. Plumbers make their best money when they are working on new construction projects. That's where the OT is. When that dries up and you are only looking to go unclog a sink or fix a toilet......that's when you start seeing your hours drop below 40 per week, because that shit does not happen as often as you think.

But people always have to eat. So look into the butcher programs OP. That is far more recession proof than plumbing.

Do HVAC. Pay is very good and there is a major demand for HVAC techs. Braising is also an option and so is welding but they are both more dangerous and can cause health issues later in life, on the flip side though braisers are in very high demand and are more likely to get paid more as a result. Get a job in niche trades because not only is demand extremely high but pay is also very good and you wont have any debt

How did you guys deal with paying for it? I'm 22 and have pretty much given up entirely because of my economic situation. I have shit credit because of medical bills, and right now my only hope is slaving away BOH and saving every penny while living off of rice and potatoes, or doing that until I can get my insurance license.
On top of that I have pretty poor fucking health despite being in good shape, and I don't expect to live very long.

Step by step guides and self help programs are sophist con man schemes. I dont know you I don't know your skills and weaknesses or interests. Nobody knows it as well as you. You're not gonna find a magic coach fairy to sit on your shoulder and tell you what's up. Its messy and different for everyone you literally just *have* to start putting yourself out there and really pushing for the things you want even if it means grinding away 7 days a week.

There's nothing wrong with not wanting to take the university route, and STEM is stating to get just as oversaturated as any other feild. Stop acting like a meme education is as bullet proof as it was 10 years ago before people started fawning over how secure that shit was

Working in the trades is perfectly fine. You have less stress at work, and you leave work at work, no emails or taking work home with you. Plus it's nice to work with your hands.

The only thing I would caution you about is imagine you are handling meat every day. You might get sick of or even grossed out about meat over time.

This. My friends a mech eng degree working in IT cuz that's how he got through college but he had better opportunity in the field he had experience and connections in. Experience and connections are the only thing that matter. Hell a lot of jobs if they like you enough they'll pay you to go back to school and finish your degree after you've been with them for a while and proven you're easy to work with, reliable, and responsible. Its a good investment to them.
