Maybe if you're retarded. It's really not an "inconvenience" to turn your burner on and let the pan heat up and then add in some form of fat or oil. You're likely already doing that with non-stick unless you're anal about calorie count since your fat.

lmao, no, it's because to make good cast iron is somewhat expensive compared to cheap non-stick coatings.

You either need to buy vintage cast iron, expensive new cast iron, or cheap cast iron that you sand down yourself and reseason.

$20 says the only cast iron you have experience with is modern Lodge or similar low quality garbage with a rough exterior since they aren't sanded at the factory like cast iron was in the past.

Now you don't NEED a smooth cooking surface to make it non-stick, but it helps.

>Expensive compared to non-stick pans

No, its not, you clearly have to idea have production works.

To make a cast iron pan you simply pour liquid iron into a mould, allow it to solidify, then clean and package, possibly pre-season if they can be bothered.

For a non-stick its 4/5 separate materials for a start. Including aluminium, the coating, the primer, the handle and the rivets/screws

Not to mentioned the labour and time required to mix that coating up.

The reason that cast iron is more expensive is that its only produced as cookware on a small scale, and therefore due to supp,y and demand, it costs more.

Fedorra wearing memelets like you with one hand on your wee-wee and the other on a "vintage" cast iron pan don't help those prices.

I got a preseasoned cast iron dutch oven I've been using. I'm a noob to cast iron.

Cooked with it a few times and i started getting black pieces of shit in my food. Internet said it was just burned pieces of food that I wasnt cleaning off properly cuz muhh no soap.

Although now it looks like its the preseason coating coming off, cuz the pieces are coming off the sides of the dutch oven and I doubt that there is food burned onto it there.

So basically i realize I have to sand off the old shitty coating and reseason.

Any advice for how to do this well? Is steel wool too abrasive?

The worst cast iron skillet is still better than the worst whatever else. And at least it *can* improve with time. You can't say that about anything else except maybe carbon steel. People buy skillets that are as old as their grandparents and restore them. With planned obsolescence being a thing, it's nice to know that there are still things you can depend on. And even if you never get it to be non-stick, you can still use it for other things. It's great for shallow-frying, searing, roasting, making cornbread and pan pizzas, etc.

nothing is too abrasive, it's cast iron, literally the only thing you'll end up removing is...iron, which as long as you leave your cooking surface smooth and level, you can reseason.

Sand it down, if you've got an orbital sander or similar, you might have luck with that, but depending on your pan shape, you may just have to do it by hand.

I like to season with flax oil, but you can use most oils, some are just better for a good seasoning than others.
