Any style of beer can be good but most craft beers in general are somewhere around "mediocre" and only look good in comparison to whatever macro is on the shelf next to it; in some places this means that you have a bunch of unremarkable lagers or stouts or whatever but in the west in general and on the west coast in particular it means you're drowning in beer that's "passable" but then hopped to oblivion because that's a cheap and easy way to make a nothingburger or gimmicky experiment palatable and appealing to the average craft beer drinker on the west coast. On top of being lazy it's also fucking obnoxious; a place with a dozen beers on tap might have 6+ IPAs - especially in the summer.

Honestly though, most holiday beers are gimmicky crap and now there's this trend where people just take an IPA and throw a bunch of spruce tips and holiday spices in and it tastes like garbage but it makes pleb palates feel adventurous so they buy it up every year. Picked up a bottle of 2018 BCBS on a whim last night. Is this year any good?

Where do you guys get your homebrewing supplies? It's been awhile since I've brewed anything, but I needed some bottle caps and starsan so I went to Northern Brewer and realized that if I added another item I'd get free shipping and a pint glass, so I bought some brewing gloves just to use around the house. They had medium, large, and extra large, and I went for the large, even though I use XL with the gloves at work. Turned out they were way too big, so I contacted them and asked if and how I could send them back in exchange for mediums and they said they wont be able to resell them so instead of wasting my money sending them back they'll just refund the costs and to just order the mediums.

I really like supporting local brew shops, but I've never had that good of customer service before. Not even shilling for NB; haven't ordered from them in years. Anyone else too busy/drunk to brew these days but still buy shit from homebrewing shops to use for other purposes? I use the bottle caps (and bottles) to store shit like frying oil and homemade sauces, and the starsan as an all purpose food safe sanitizer.

I drink at breweries, and most of the breweries I go to are bring your own food or have food trucks on site. That forms the bulk of my dining out. If I go eat at a restaurant with more common beers, I usually just have iced tea and drink beer later. Why pay a premium for a pour of subpar beer?
There are certain distributed beers that I'll drink if a restaurant has in cans or on tap. There's a place I go to that often has Port Brewing or Mikkeller in cans. A local taproom / bottle shop often has good local stuff on tap, but again it's bring your own food.

It is what it is, people don't like to chew their beer most of the year around here. There's a good selection of Belgian styles as well and a rotation of other things, but ales are dominant along with lagered everything and the occasional kolsch. And honey wheat ales. I actually get a pretty broad selection that rotates regularly, but the selection at most grocery stores is pale ale dominant. Taps are where you see more variety because a lot of places don't even bottle half their shit.

Start with a basic kit in a style he likes that's easy to brew with a limited kit. Basically most ales. Partial mash kits are some of the easiest to start with, you get to feel like you're doing something other than pouring in liquid malt extract. If you dont have a mash tun, a 10 gallon pot and a powerful propane burner you aren't going to be able to do all grain recipes. It's not a style I make often, and I've yet to hit it on the head, but if you're making it entirely from grain, or steeping some specialty nonsense in, it would probably look something like this for a 5 gallon batch:

>4 lbs pale 2-row (or about 3lbs of pale extract)
>4 lbs Marris Otter
>1 lb Crystal 80 Malt (60 might be a bit sweet for a "nut brown")
>12 oz Biscuit Malt (or another pound of Marris Otter)
>4 oz or so of Light Chocolate Malt (the 350 stuff, not the 450)

East Kent Golding is probably your best bet, but Fuggles, Brewer's Gold, that kind of thing will work. Nothing too piney, citrusy or fruity, which rules out a whole bunch of American hops.

You'll want to aim a bit high with your water, depending on what you're cooking with. Expect to lose at least a gallon and a half to boiling and trub/transfer. You'll also want reasonably hard water - something with a decent carbonate content. If your tap water is reasonably soft (and it will be chlorinated, so boil it first, and then let it sit for a few days before you start your beer), you can get calcium bicarbonate salt for your water. It won't take much more than a pinch (half a gram's the usual prescribed dose).

With the sanitation and the boiling, and the lautering, and all the testing, it sounds like a lot of work, and it is, but if it's something you enjoy doing, it's absolutely worth it.

I've heard that some kits are quite good, and those that aren't can be tweaked until they are, but it depends on how fresh and accurate the ingredients are.

I do think that altering your water chemistry, and amount will help you get the flavour you're after. Steeping a more biscuity malt as an addition might help too.

I used to think this, but have had too many great session ipas and lower abv stouts with a ton of flavor that I think the higher abv mostly assists the body of the beer. The higher ones are commonly thicker feeling. I had a 3% stout that felt like an 8% body wise. That's still one of my favorite stouts just because of how impressive it is to get that type of body from a 3% stout of all things

Higher ABV indicates a higher base malt content. The flavour is just about everything else, unless using a very lightly toasted base malt, like a Vienna, Munich, or M-O.

The coffee notes come from darker malts (chocolate, high L crystal/caramel, and black/patent malt), which really don't add to the alcohol content - most of their sugars have been converted into things that S.C. yeast can't break down, such as caramel, or char.
