We might enjoy carbonated beverages because of evolution and beer-making. Flat, stagnant water might not be safe to drink but bubbly beer would be full of good yeasts/bacteria that could outcompete bacteria that would make us sick.

I can't drink flat water in the morning, it causes me nausea for 5/6 hours.

Since I've been sober, I started drinking diet soda just for the carbonation. Flavor doesn't matter, just the feeling in my throat like when I'd get home from work and chug a disgusting cheap lager. Diet Dr. Pepper is preferred, it's very strongly carbonated.
