I’d say during the winter take a Vitamin D supplement. Sunlight is incredibly imperative to Vitamin D levels, more so than any food and from my understanding Vitamin D deficiencies can greatly affect mood. This is different from SAD itself of course but there’s some overlap.

General health, which is heavily affected by diet, has a huge effect on depression. The role of anti-depressants is short to medium term help for people to help them break out of feedback loops that keep them depressed, and as long term treatment for people who have recurrent severe depression.

OFFICIAL CLARIFICATIONS:

1. Seasonal depression is bullshit made-up nonsense. You're just lazy and autistic. You can not blame your innate lameness and weakness on a disease. It's just what you are.

2. No amount of bacon topped, sriracha-infused, cheese-slathered carbs will change the fact that you are just a gross loser. Put a fried egg on it to complete the cliche -- doesn't matter. It's you. You are the author of your inadequacies.

That said, I suggest some yummy Buffalo ramen tater tots!

It's quite common especially in locales woth dynamic seasonal changes i.e. dry Summers and snowy Winters. The best way to combat feeling blue during Fall and Winter is to indulge in rich and comforting foods like root vegetables and seasonally apt proteins. For me this means that I cook a lot of squash and turkey, heh.

As another anon said, increase vit d intake (tuna, salmon, beef liver, egg yolks, etc) and maybe even consider a paleo or keto diet. Carbs and sugar are no bueno for SAD IME.
There are actually diets tailored to this though, so google is your friend. Also consider probiotic rich food. We don't really understand how it all fits together yet, but 90% of serotonin is produced in your tummy and eating well does seem to have an impact on your mood and depression.
Diet alone probably won't fix it, but coupled with other lifestyle changes (more sunlight andhttps://www.everydayhealth.com/pictures/delicious-dinners-help-fight-seasonal-depression/#09 exercise for instance) can potentially help you!
Hate this sites layout, but their recipes are on point IMO for SAD.

>Are there any foods/recipes that help combat seasonal depression?
Depression is light related and sleep cycle stuff. Replace the crap fluorescent bulbs with proper sunlight and approved light that doesn't have the opposite effect on your psyche. Use a blue light blocking kindle for bedtime electronics.
Time change affects everyone, so next you to phase into it ahead of time with a week or two of melatonin at bedtime, moving your clock 5 minutes at a time. Take time-released B vitamins during the day to boost up your nutrition and energy, so you're good and tired at bedtime.
Get outside to exercise before you do a thing each day. Walk the dog to the end of the block, drink a coffee on the balcony or in the backyard. Or exercise inside if needed, but play a mind game with some sunny stuff on TV., jimmy buffet music. I like the Murder in Paradise series, but it could be Hawaii Five-O.
Plan a vacation....gives you something to look forward to. Taking care of yourself should be a routine that includes lots of self-care, and vacations on the horizon. For me, concert tickets, shows/plays, in rotation are a good part of the looking forward to excitement rotation.
Crock pot and slow foods from long prep time stuff like sauerbraten, or a big brisket smoking day, build anticipation and things to look forward to having. Coming in the door to some nice smells is terrific.

Definitely use vitamin D supplements and find some sort of indoor cardio. Jumproping is great exercise, and burpees don't require any equipment. There aren't any specific foods, but I would track nutrients to make sure you aren't missing anything. If you want to try St John's wort do it on a day where you don't have to do anything because it gave me very loose shits so be careful.
Picking up or working on some kind of hobby helps too, waking up and seeing visible progress on something you like can keep give you something to look forward to on bleak days.
Start all of this now, because it is easier to prevent than to fix.

I've had depression my whole life. It's worse in Winter (I live in Scandinavia).
Bought one of those SAD lamps 2 years ago it really does help. It's not a miracle cure, but it makes things a little better.
And that can make the difference between sitting on the sofa all day and being able to get up and go for a walk. And the walk will also help.

>> No.11457898

try to get outside when it's light out as much as you can - it seems dumb but it helps a lot. there's something to be said about fresh air + sunlight.
as far as food goes, try not to exactly repeat a meal pattern for a prolonged period of time. even if it's little changes, like a different kind of sandwich or a different breakfast cereal some days of the week, it'll help break monotony and keep you a little bit more stimulated.
it should also go without saying - booze isn't a fix-all, and neither is caffeine. building a dependence on either early on to combat it will only make it worse in the long run.
you can do it anon, 14 more weeks until spring

Eat things that you thouroughly enjoy eating and making. Care less about calories than enjoyment but don't completely ignore it.

Anything you enjoy at all, no matter if it's food related or not, is a good way to fight depression.

t. Had severe depression that turned into episodic depression that turned into having a couple of bad days here and there over the course of the last 10 years or so.

Not who you're whining to, but you seem to have no idea how miserable real heat is. Or humidity plus heat. I'm not saying extended darkness and freezing isn't miserable either, but I mean, light a fucking fire and wear more clothing. You can always put another coat on when you're cold or add more wood to the fire, but you can't get /more/ naked when you're hot. I spent 8 years in a hot and humid apartment: often 100f, usually 90-98% humidity. For like 5 months every year I sat at my computer completely naked, on a towel, with an ice pack pressed against my chest to cool my blood, and I'm just a skinny, tall guy (only mentioning that because fat people tend to be portrayed as sweaty, and that isn't the case for me). Extremes in either way are equally SHIT.

Your subconsciousness is begging you to do something. Start sorting your life. Write down your current shortcomings and then tick off the ones you can do something about. Then, number them from easiest to hardest to change. Next page. Start with the easiest one first and write what you can do to fix it and how long itll take you to do it. Regaining the ability to steer your own life is incredibly empowering. As you make an effort you feel better about yourself and the things you cannot change will bother you less and less. The momentum you have will guide you to completing your list faster and faster. Do this TODAY, because you are worth it to yourself. We all make so much time for our family, friends, and jobs that sometimes we forget to also make room for ourselves even though we are just as important as they are. Have a better relationship with yourself.
