So it seems the Mexican food selections in NYC are growing! I live nearby and would like to take advantage.

All over the Mexican neighborhoods you can find taquerias that sell the usual antojito stuff, but where should I go for more traditional dishes that you wouldn't find on every last taqueria menu? I'm open to going to any of the boroughs really. But if there is anything in Bushwick, that would be great since I go there a lot.

How do people afford living their then? I mean they can't *all* be living in section 8 housing right?

There's gotta be street vendors, cooks, cleaners etc. Where do they live?

>> No.11259553

>>11259549
Well there are 400k people living in housing projects. Plus a lot of people have rent stabilization in their apartments, meaning the landlords can only raise their rents a certain amount per year.

Working class immigrants (and hipsters) tend to just share apartments.

Bushwick, huh? I live there too. You should try "Los Hermanos" off of Jefferson St. stop on the L.

It's basically a tortilla factory and a restaurant, amazing food. Cash only.

It used to be that your friends from LA would come to visit and you'd be embarrassed about the Mexican food in NYC. This hasn't been the case for over a decade. We have high end places doing top tier Mexican, but what's more important from street level are the dive places turning out food that's as good as what you'd get in CDMX or Puebla. This is because the earlier wave of Mexican immigrants ended up in the kitchens of Italian or French restaurants, but the newer group (mostly from Puebla it seems) open their own businesses slinging tacos, tortas, cemitas, cholupas and whatnot else. Many of them are even hardcore enough to have the gyro machine for the al pastor. The best are hardcore enough to even make their own tortillas. If Jonathan Gold were still alive even he could find satisfaction here now.

As far as Brooklyn goes I would favor Sunset Park over Bushwick for Mexican. It may as well be Puebla York. But there are some solid, if hipstery options in Bushwick. the following link might be useful:

Bushwick is super Mexican too, about as much as SP I'd say. But SP has more variety. I would say the most variety is found between Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and Corona.

Also there are a ton of non-Poblano Mexicans, Guerrero and Oaxaca are very common too. I almost dated a qt from Guerrero

ROFL I didn't even look at OP pic, fuq me. I live near St. Barbara's church, Central Ave. There are plenty of bars around Bushwick Ave., and a few bootleg dive bars on
Knickerbocker Ave.

I had no idea there were bars on Bushwick Ave, I thought that was a dead street for that kind of stuff.
It looks like most of the neighborhood's bars are either West of Myrtle Ave or near the Halsey stop.
There's a bar on Myrtle I like called Bootleg bar, they have cheap beers and play good music. I went to a place on Wyckoff and Hancock called Luv Story and it was cool, lot's of black qts there.

Oh, just remembered. You should try out Bushwick Taco Company, but they're a bit deep - you'll have to venture out depending on where you live. One of the best burritos I've ever eaten, makes you feel like grandma just hugged you.

Even that deep in Bushwick now there's plenty to do, I don't mind going there. I notice that there doesn't seem to be much Mexican stuff over there though, they seem to open up most of their businesses West of Myrtle.

In NYC Mexicans are Mexibros for the most part. They come here, work hard, basically carry the entire food industry on their backs, raise families and make fucking great neighbors. I have no idea what it's like in the rest of the country, but I love living in Sunset Park. If I were 20 years younger it would be Bushwick.

No doubt. Philly has been getting a lot of immigrant spillover from those who land in NYC and balk at the rent. It's dome a lot for the food there.

A lot of the most interesting places are divey Fujian places. Like Hometown Cuisine on 8th Aver. The order there is steamed pork dumplings, fish balls in soup and hand pulled noodles DRY with egg and vegetable. That's a straight off the boat lunch for two for under $15. But the top tier would be Bamboo Garden for dim sum on a weekend. You could just do that a few times over and not get bored.
