Nearly every meal. Every full meal I cook costs under $5 and makes 2-3 portions which I freeze for lunch/dinner another day.
When I go full hardcore money saving jew mode I can live on $1.50 a day if I have to, eating veggies, cheap nasty meat rice and pasta. Not the tastiest though.

Buy a 10 pound bag of chicken leg quarters, you can get them for less than a dollar a pound. Chicken leg quarters are good for a number of recipes, I usually remove the skin and season them before grilling them. A meal with a chicken leg quarter + broccoli and a baked potato would easily be under $5.

>> No.11168149

these threads are dumb because if you really wanted to go full austerity you buy and cook in bulk to maximize the savings, then weigh out one serving to determine if it is less than $5

It's not as easy as you think, and I'm starting to doubt any of you live outside of your parent's home. You can't always buy in bulk because of expiration.

Alternate between layers of sliced potatoes and sliced of corned beef + onions with generous amounts of sage. Once you run out of ingredients, fill up to the top layer of potatoes with a thin gravy or strong stock.

Cover with tin foil, bake for an hour, uncover, bake again until all the lquid has soaked into the potatoes, top layer should be crisp

Assuming you don't mind buying your protein in bulk and freezing it there's really no limit.
Because I'm currently living in excess, I'll usually have a whole pork chop, sliced and burned in the bottom of a pot. Throw in overpriced noodles for a nice rich noodle soup/ramen. An egg is like, $0.10. Rice is also super good if you want something drier. Make a bag of frozen vegatables. The shit that steams. Mix with pepper and butter.
$2-3 a serving?
