Oh I didn't work while in high school. But I was an assistant manager in charge of hiring people at a local sandwhich shop and a lot of the people I hired in summer were 16/17 trying do earn some cash while school was out.

In my state you can get a working permit at 16 iirc but to take on that worker the company needs to pay more in insurance to cover the additional liability. Many major businesses won't do it. Minor and family businesses might especially in the South, bible belt, and possibly other red states.

McD's here when they would hire minors wouldn't allow them to touch any of the cooking equipment. If you work in retail many times you'll need to use a baler and a knife which is no bueno for minors even if you are just a cashier. Who do you think stocks the stuff up front? In my Walmart it is the cashier. Who takes care of the cardboard waste from the boxes they open? Everyone takes care of their own back at the baler.
