It varies by location. The McDonald's near me used to be horrible and I didn't go for years after getting a spoiled burger from there, but they cleaned up and now the food is actually okay. I only get it a few times a year at most but the egg biscuit is my favorite and it's never dry. The hash brown looks like shit, you should make a complaint to McDonald's with the pics and they'll probably give you a coupon for a free meal or something.

But another issue is that you tried to get breakfast foods hours before the breakfast rush. It'd be like going to a bakery at the end of the day and being upset that the bread isn't as fresh as it was when it just came out of the oven.

What were you expecting at 4am??? They were serving food held over from the previous day. That crap was in a a hold bin for atleast 6 hours...more than likely 18 hour. All the fast food places in my town, including McDonald's, started closing down at 10pm on weekdays, 1am on weekends or something crazy like that. Only place that's 24 hours is a Jack in the Box, and you get about the same quality and service (relative to ordering earlier) at that place.

Fact is, the type of person working at a fast food joint at 4am is either
a)a degenerate druggie that's using uppers to stay up that late
