I did the same thing before, how long were you holding it? I held onto the metal handle of mine for like 5-10 seconds before I felt the burning. I'm guessing you didn't get burned as badly as I did because I wasn't even able to leave the sink to stop running water on it for like 45 minutes. It hurt for the rest of the night but in the morning it didn't even hurt even though like 1/3 of my hand was blistered. Make sure you don't pop the blisters either, let it heal and break on their own.

Rub the burns on the sides of your nose. The oils from your face will reduce the burning.

Flow chart:

Burn self and have open wound from it: Cold water then apply whatever burn treatment and bandage you normally would apply, cry.

Burn self, but no open wound: Cold water then slather on yellow mustard, wait 15 minutes, rinse off mustard, continue with the day's chores. You have a 2-5 minute window to get the mustard on. If you don't do it soon, it won't be as effective, but put it on anyway. Never use it on an open wound or you'll regret it more than the original burn.

Google, "Yellow mustard burn". I now keep some in the mini-fridge in the shop. It REALLY fucking works well. There's some burn relief product the EMTs use that is made from whatever chemical it is that helps protect your skin from the damage. Soy has it too, but soy is harder to use for this purpose and I can't attest to its effectiveness.

If the burn is oil/grease based like bacon fat, make sure to wash it with soap before applying the mustard or it won't be as effective.

He is right, wet towels transfer heat much better. I had to make that painful experience myself because I also thought that wetting the towel would make it even cooler than a dry one.

I can attest to this, someone handed me a stock pot once with a wet towel that was pretty thick. Yet, the heat almost immediately went through the towel within 3 seconds. Didn't get blisters or that badly burned, but felt like dropping it, yet it found a counter quickly enough.
