Hey guys I am looking into a ketogenic diet for my diabetic type 2 father. but i came to a halt when i realized the brain uses primarily carbs, glucose for fuel. how do people sustain long term ketogenic diet w/o glucose for brain fuel

If you're of sound health and maintain a proper keto diet, you should be fine
If you're not careful, ketoacidosis could do some really fucked shit to your blood pH so if you Keto, make sure to keto right

That said, it gives good results when properly managed

>> No.11036559

OP doesn't understand, or pretends not to understand, the word 'ketogenic'.

Bless your heart, OP. The brain runs on ketones very efficiently. Glucose being the brain's main source of fuel is a meme.

What is the quickest way to get into ketosis? Fasting? Working out to deplete glycogen?

That's wrong, you retard.

brain likes glucose
gluconeogenesis occurs, supplies glucose
complex carb cultists btfo

yeah gluconeogenesis is cool but it will wear down the organism in the long run

1) Gluconeogenesis. The liver can make huge amounts of glucose, more than enough for the organs that need it. Just because your body needs glucose doesn't mean you need to eat it. Contrary to popular belief, protein is not needed for this, the liver can make more than enough glucose from fat - once you're in ketosis, because of...
2) betahydroxybutyrate. This is the most common ketone, and its one that the brain will happily use for >75% of its energy needs. What little glucose is needed comes from glucose made by the liver via gluconeogenesis from the glycerol that is left over after the lipids are converted to ketones.

Not really. There are a few other people that can get into ketoacidosis problems, but they're quite rare. Virtually all of ketoacidosis cases are type 1 diabetics, or type 2 diabetics with extensive beta cell failure.

citation? one of the problems type 2 diabetics have is their liver goes into continuous - and extremely heavy - gluconeogenesis. their beta cells conk out, but the liver and its runaway gluconeogenesis pathways never do, until they eventually die from other complications. the amount of gluconeogenesis during ketosis is extremely low by comparison (once you're in ketosis there are very few organs that are using glucose, and they simply don't need very much), so I'm curious why you think this would burn out the liver when it doesn't burn out for type 2 diabetics?

both work, but neither may be. if you're non-obese then you probably go into ketosis at night already. my wife isn't doing keto, but she had to fast for a blood test and I checked her ketones that morning just out of curiosity and she was in mild ketosis (0.8). if you have metabolic health problems - obesity, metabolic syndrome, etc - then fasting is probably the fastest way to get into ketosis. just cutting carbs will eventually do it but it may take awhile because those people tend to have a lot of glycogen to burn through, for some really bad cases it can take a week or more even with fasting.

Brain can run on glucose or ketone bodies.
But it runs better on glucose.

>runs better on glucose.
Do you have a citation for this claim? It sounds like one of those myths that everybody knows but are totally wrong. Evolutionarily it makes no sense that the brain would run worse in starvation ketosis since that's when you need to be sharpest and quickest-witted for survival.

Don't fall for the fucking keto meme, dude. Just reduce his calories, cut out added sugar, and get him eating unprocessed carb sources (whole grains, rice, tubers, and beans). If he isn't a complete invalid get him moving more, too.

>Just reduce his calories
do that and the metabolism will adapt to the lower caloric intake and as a result maintenance levels will be reduced, directly opposing any weight loss goals.

Keto is a ridiculous meme but it works and the science behind it is sound.

>whole grains, rice, tubers,
Yeah OP, help your dad die faster by feeding him things that fuck up insulin in his blood. That way you will be free to stop thinking about keto even sooner.
