Don't see an ice cream thread so how about it?

What brands do you usually buy and what do you find underrated? tried Neapolitan flavor for the first time and its a mix i'm not sure why i haven't tried before. keeps the flavor from getting dull by having three flavors all right there in front of you.

Fruit sorbet and ice cream is objectively the best. Melon, lemon, strawberry, mango. So fresh, so good.

Really? I live near Tillamook OR. I personally hate tillamook brand icecream and find it not much better than your typical national chain ice cream (Breyers, Blue bell) and in fact I think it's worse than hagendass. To each their own but I just don't think it has that much flavor and has a weird consistency.. I do like their butter and cheese though.

t. worked in mom and pop grocery store and have tried all tillamook flavors when they'd get damaged or get too many delivered.

Most local creameries are alright. Umpqua and Humboldt are also pretty decent from my experience but I don't think they're very easy to get outside their region whereas Tillamook has really expanded all over the country in the past few years. Blue Bell is a big deal in Texas I guess but even before they started using HFCS they were always kind of mediocre in my opinion, so I'm pretty sure their popularity is just because they were the only ones in the game here for half a century.

Like >>10931095 said though, what matters isn't whether you're buying local, buying from the big names, or hippie organic shit from Sprouts but rather the quality of the specific brand and flavor. Their fake germanness and huge market share aside, Haagen-Dazs is usually still a pretty good choice. I usually do get Tillamook when it's available though since I like the flavors and that it's a co-op, but you can't really go wrong with most brands above a certain price point.

If you're having trouble trying to figure out if you're eating good stuff, know that high-quality ice cream should be dense and creamy, and shouldn't ever get icy in the freezer. It shouldn't be airy, and that iciness is often a symptom of being too airy or having fillers.

I like to add a splash of milk to the top before I eat ice cream as well, it slightly melts the topmost layer and what does melt off combines with the milk to almost form a slightly thick sauce which almost acts like a glaze.

If you bet Tillamook ice cream, the the stuff with egg yolks added in, it makes it really rich and helps to balance out the sweetness.

I ignored the shills like everyone else, but posting oregon strawberry puts me over the edge.

Tillamook's ice cream is a scam as far as I can tell. There's more dissolved air in it than the cheapest store brand. It's not creamy, it just leaves a viscous film on your tongue. Nearly no strawberries -- just one or two chunks for every cup of white ice cream. It's not even vanilla, it's just plain ice cream. It smelled like nothing, tasted like nothing, was barely sweet. Picked up the oregon black cherry a month later from another store just to make sure it wasn't some bizarre QC issue. Nope, no cherries, just white flavorless air-filled ice cream. Had it again at a friend's house a year later, same shit. 7 fucking dollars a carton.

Apparently I'm still pretty pissed about this.
