Eh I think that depends on the meme I mean intristically memes aren't funny in and of themselves. All a meme is , is a transfer of information between a group of people, they could be words, symbols, phrases, actions, etc. People think "meme" means something that's popular but that's completely wrong.

>> No.10922794

repeating something from someone else is never funny. It's sad because it's not original. the fact that it is a repetition takes away any humor it might have had, especially when it's the nth time you've seen/heard it.

>> No.10922838

>>10922794
Well it's not the repeating that's funny, it's the manipulation. Don't get me wrong, the LOLCATZ / Advice Animals format that got so popular and still is today (which was really ripped from YTMND) was never really that funny to begin with but things like "Socially Awkward Penguin" or "bachelor frog" were only funny because they were relatable.

I mean look at the current 4chan memes, they have ALWAYS been about shops or altering photos, even back with cockmongler or longcat they were just simple funny pictures. But now we have pepe and Wojack which evolved from, idk what to call those reaction images. It's pretty interesting how memes popularized so much and how nobody really is credited even though we All know they are "stolen" ideas. Shit people made A TON of money off of "Trollface"

Well this right here is a huge reason why picture based memes stick around and evolve so fast because there's infinite versions to be made especially in this day and age where templates are so easy to create.

>It's also not funny because it's a bunch of dumb frivolous clutter that gets in the way of having a serious discussion.

I think it's an easy way for people who lurk that genuinely wouldn't have anything interesting to add to the conversation can make a post and get replies. The thing that sets 4chan apart from Reddit is the constant activity, threads move fast like chat rooms vs Reddit that's more of an actual message board.

Like look at Facebook, you make a post, it gets a bunch of replies right then and there, then once it stops it stops. People don't revisit threads often.

Shitposting would be the internet equivalent to small talk I guess.

But to be completely honest I think the answer to your question is. People don't know how to communicate with each other. They seek instant gratification or they troll because it's easy to be negative and act better than others. People seek pressure free social interactions and "dopamine feedback loops"

Like me and you having this natural, casual conversation isn't as rare as you think BUT most people don't take online interactions as seriously as they do the FEELING of getting ANY reaction at all. So they sacrifice substance for quantity of post. Like I'm willing to bet A LOT of these meme post are done by 2-3 people who post the same post every day.
Check my picture out to see what a Dopamine Feedback Loop (compulsion loop) is. It's been highly studied in memetics and social media

That's what I don't understand though. I don't get ANY feeling from a random or off-topic post. And a negative reply brings a negative feeling. I don't desire either of those. I have a hard time understanding that there are people who do. To use your example, I fail to see how a "negative" reply produces a dopamine hit.

and even if they do derive some small amount of pleasure from it, I have an even harder time grasping why they would settle for that when they could have a more serious discussion instead, about whatever topic happens to float their boat. Some people just want to be noticed, big reason some kids act out. Getting any response at all validated them. In terms of social media people can only use like what , 146 characters? So people had to dumb down as such. It's a big reason why shortening words into acronyms picked up and why emojis have replaced whole sentences.

I disagree. Or perhaps I didn't explain myself well enough.

For example, a person could post copypasta and then get a few minor hits when people groan or tell him his shit's stale. Or, that same person could instead go elsewhere and engage in a serious discussion of whatever his/her personal interests might be. Surely that would be a bigger hit than yet another meme reply?

It takes just as much effort to, say, come on 4chan and post a meme vs. going on a board aligned with one of a person's hobbies and discussing that?

I mean look at trolling or internet bullying, some people really get their feelings hurt. Like I used to fuck around and be a dick online in the early 2000s but seeing people like Chrischan or that Jessie Slaughter girl crying and begging people to stop really got me thinking how much it really does effect people. You can argue "if they can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen" but the internet can be used to build people up too. It's just we are in a day and age where everybody questions motives of nice people and thinks they want something (views, awards, etc) but NOBODY questions bullies because everybody assumes all people are mean intristically

I think it's more of the fact that a bully's intentions are clearly known, whereas otherwise it's a guessing game.

Don't get me wrong, I think bullying is horrible, but the thing about online bullying is that it's pretty simple to avoid it. It's not like bullying at work or school where you HAVE to physically go to a certain location where the bullying takes place. Assuming, of course, we're talking about simple bullying and not someone getting doxxed.

Yeah I think it's more so a bigger effect on children and older people. I work retail and I see and talk to kids and parents all the time. Kids take social media VERY seriously, it's literally a huge part of their life. They watch YouTube all the time and follow the lives of kids just like them and live vicariously through them. I'm sure a lot of it (at least with CWC) had nothing to do with "attention" but rather had to do with an autistic obsession with things being correct. I've often been in discussions where I've been accused of replying "for attention" when attention was literally the last thing on my mind. Instead my reasons for replying were simply to correct errors. Some people have a hard time with letting mistakes go unanswered. But that's the 'tism talking.

I admit I don't know much about cwc, but I doubt attention is the only motivator for people posting stuff online. I've shared a lot of old technical info about old trucks online, not because I want attention but rather I don't want it to be forgotten and perhaps it might help other people who share my hobby. I've benefited from online info that others have posted when I have a problem I need solving, so I figure why not share the info I have in case someone else is looking for it? Of course that may not apply in his case but not every example of online posting has anything to do with attention.
