>>10709368
Hardly, Corryvreckan would be close to a forest fire smoke, Lagavulin is smooth, sherried and more dominantly medicinal smoke.

>>10705416
If I were you, I would try a few distilleries to figure out what you like. Speyside for sherry, Islay for smoky, Jap/Taiwan for something else entirely. While a 15ml bottle might more costly per liter, figuring out what you like is way cheaper than chugging several mediocre bottlings. Cheap entry for Japs would be Nikka whisky from the barrel. If you want to try a few different ideas about scottish whisky, try to find a Glenmorangie sampler pack. Same base 10 yo whisky with 4 different finishings in different barrels, easy on the wallet but rich in information. Picture absolutely related.

That's because the sapphire is far more popular, presumable because it's got a much lighter gin flavor since they do an infusion by vapor through the botanicals instead of the classic copper pot distillation with london dry gins like Bombay Dry. Stop circulating liquor vapor headspace through your nose, boy. It tastes terrible to you despite 80 proof liquor being on the mild end of the spectrum because you have shit for drinking experience. Bourbon just tasted like "whiskey" until I worked my way through a bottle of rye whiskey through many sipping sessions. Now it's excessively easy to pick out the rye flavor. So I'm a bit of a late bloomer and I'm starting to try alcohol a few years after being legally able. Typical parent with addiction story that kept me away.
I have no idea how alcohol works and what's the difference in favors between rum, whiskey, etc.
Any help with figuring out what to try? Within a budget of course. I want to branch out of the girly drinks while eating out.
This is my experience so far:
So far I've tried a few cheap whiskeys but can't really enjoy the taste.
Jagermeister on the other hand tastes like cold medicine and not like whiskey so I'm actually very fond of it.
Schnapps so far has been too sweet.
Captain Morgan was kind of bad and reminded me of whiskey, but I found a cheap brand that tastes good in a coke.
Tequila tasted like fritos soaked in alcohol.
With beer, the light stuff seems to not be my taste. Cider's alright. Blue Moon's decent, I liked a red ale and a guinness stout pretty well.
And I'm good with red and white wine.

>> No.10713553

>>10713447
Most of bourbon's flavor is from the ~15% rye it's distilled from and then the charred oak from the barrel, so if you want bourbon but more intense, go for rye whiskey.

Rum is either sugarcane flavored if light or molasses+barrel flavored if dark, or vanilla+cinnamon/other spices if spiced. Mixing with coke is a college meme and you'd instantly be better off mixing dark rum with ginger beer (beer, not ale, it's like ginger ale but significantly more powerful) to make dark&stormies. Gosling's is a good started ginger beer but I've found cock&bull to have pretty bad throat burn.

With tequila, look out for "100% agave" printed on the label or else it's a mixto that's distilled from only 51% agave and 49% sugar and tastes much worse and much more bitter (example: Jose Cuervo, anything labelled "gold" or "silver"). 100% agave tequilas are a little bit more expensive than Jose Cuervo but are extremely worth it ($20 for jose, $23 for espolon for example). Lunazul is the budget favorite, I've personally tried Espolon, but from what I've gathered, the cheaper 100% agave tequilas are similar. Good mixed with coke with a squeezed lime wedge (batanga) or mixed with grapefruit soda with a squeezed lime wedge (paloma). Tequila straight tastes like essence of vegetable to me but mixtos are far too bitter. Age statements in order of younger to older for 100% agave tequilas: Blanco, Reposado, Anejo. The choice for both sipping and mixing is reposado since it's the best mix of price and smoothness.

It's worth it to at least try gin as well, the starter of choice being New Amsterdam gin since it's lighter on the juniper (pine flavor) and has more citrus, so it's essentially a citrus vodka+.You might not like it straight, but it mixes well in a Tom Cpllins or a gin&tonic with a lemon or lime wedge (I also like it straight or mixed in a martini)

A great thing to do is picking up a few reasonably-priced liqueurs and mixing up drinks with them, whether by recipe or experiment. You can find great taste and it's a good hobby activity as well. Try to avoid syrupy liqueurs that come in a long line of flavors since these are mostly artificial and not really all that great.

Jagermeister is a bit overly sweet as well, so I usually mix it 1:1 with good vodka for a strong drink or with soda water/club soda/seltzer for a weaker drink (both with ice cubes) to reduce the sweetness. If you like jagermeister, you might also like other herbal liqueurs/liquors like fernet or ouzo for dry, or sambuca for sweet (look up anisettes).

Unfortunately, the most expensive stuff is typically worth its price if you aren't trying to kill yourself with horrible alcohol the palette was never meant to palette, and you want something that can actually go down smooth with little burn and has actual taste. OP, start small, buy 50mL and 100mL bottles until you decide for yourself what's best.
