It's a kind of cultural identification. When I was a lad, teddy boys were a new social group, in my early teens Mods and Rockers,used to meet up and fight. Then came the hippy movement and on it goes. It seems to be an easy form of identification of a particular group in, I guess many societies, who share certain ideals, wants and view if the world they live in. Some terms can be seen as derogatory, such as Snowflakes. I imagine if we looked back at a society there would be a number of sub-cultures within that society. Millennials etc al is an easy term to describe a particular group at a particular time in a particular culture - I think!!
