In Japan "cutlet" not only refers to the general shape but the cooking technique used. You know it better as "katsu" like the chicken katsu they have in Hawaiian fast food places, and that has its roots from Japan.

That anime image doesn't mean anything. Menchikatsu or croquettes would look similar. From the picture it says "menchikatsu" (literally mince (meat) katsu), yet it says cutlets which doesn't even make sense. Moreover both of them usually found in street stalls and 7-11s, I never seen it in a restaurant before, especially menchikatsu.

Washington-fag here, katsu is available in most Japanese and teriyaki restaurants around my area. I don't know if any Hawaiian places, but I haven't really looked very hard. I always associated it with Japanese coming before Hawaiian.
