In the new avengers film, the main villain defeats the avengers by collecting the infinity stones, ancient artifacts that when combined give you total power of the universe, and uses his power to wipe out half of all life by snapping his fingers, including most of the main characters, by turning living beings into dust. As those randomly chosen fade from existence, they say things like 'i feel strange'. The movie ends moments after most of the main characters are killed while the survivors watch them die.

It's not much of a spoiler if you read Marvel or even visit /co/. The movies aren't anywhere near the comics but Thanos using the gauntlet to kill a fuckton of people is.
