Yes, they are. There is literally no instance where the texture contrast and enhanced flavor of crispy fried eggs isn't superior to non-crispy. A non-crispy fried egg is basically just a lazy stand-in for a poached or soft-boiled egg.

>A non-crispy fried egg is basically just a lazy stand-in for a poached or soft-boiled egg.
Dude, it's poached in tomatoes rather than water, but it is certainly a poached egg. It shouldn't be crispy on any planet. Just stop your food pickiness.

Shakshuka as a craze is indeed a newer phenomenon, from the last couple of decades. I grew up in Miami in 30% jewish neighborhood, and saw it not even once on any menu in the 80s, 90s in Miami or Israel, and not in anyone I knew who was coming and going from Israel for family, work or partying raving about it.

As a person who knows my shit, I will say it's very similar to Italian eggs diavolo or purgatorio (devils eggs meaning spicier hot food), where eggs are literally poached in a simple chili-flake enhanced marinara sauce, often a fresh sauce just simmered down from a container or can of tomatoes. Yes, you can use fresh tomatoes, but you'd want to skin them which requires a bit of effort for mornings, but you do want it chunky. When shakshuka started making the rounds in popularity this is what it most reminded me of, and it's a lazy meal that is JUST A VEHICLE FOR GOOD BREAD, as it is in Italy. Shakshuka might be only half tomatoes, with the other half simmered peppers. It's got the extremely unbalanced amount of tomatoes to egg ratio so that you can enjoy more bites of bread with it.In italy, you might even serve right over the toast. You have pull apart bread experience to dip, whether a type of flatbread pita or the very large sesame bagel-like bread you see all over Jerusalem, the simit koulari. If you don't care for the shakshuka spice profile, it'd be preference to change it or tone it down. It reminds me of north african harissa, which is the Libyan origin of the dish, so some chefs just add too much to be "authentic". The cumin, garlic, parsley is fine, but I don't want too much coriander, saffron, caraway and other things snuck in there in a large way like carrots. To each their own.
