Generally their isn't much of a difference. They both come from the short loin primal muscle. They both have a strip and a filet. The rule of thumb is almost always the size of the filet. That being said, the steaks labeled porterhouse usually come from the far end of the short loin or the vein end of the strip. Again though, I've worked at grocery stores and restaurants and the classification comes down to whatever they want to call it and are interchangeable in a lot of ways. I've seen t bones with huge filets and porters with small ones. I worked at a grocery store for a long time and if we would have t bones on sale wed cut down an entire short loin and label the whole thing t bones. If you think a porter tastes better then a t bone you're an idiot they're the same thing, its just size.
