There’s a lot of different grades of meat. Things like “skillet mix” can probably already be replaced with lab meat. Nicely marbled steaks, though? I don’t believe they’re even close.

I've been looking forward to trying to for a long time, but I want them to keep it nutritionally the same. I think it's easier to make it without the iron/fat (and lactose for lab milk) so they're trying to push it as being healthier, but that's not really the case. If it's nutritionally the same I'll eat/drink the products even if they didn't taste quite as good though.

I see this kind of thought a lot coming from people who eat CAFO meat. I can understand thinking that if you only eat game or local meat from small farms, but if you try explaining to them about CAFO with cramped and dirty conditions, antibiotic use, etc. they just don't want to hear it. It's okay to be critical of certain things but it almost feels like it's just a fear of technology driving those stances. Lab meat can potentially be cleaner than what we have now.

Labs are great! They’re kept clean and orderly, and smart people use cool tools like lasers and microscopes to work inside them. I think it’s exciting. It’s different from ranching for sure, but that doesn’t make it bad.

Do you distrust labs to make a safe product? I trust them - the companies behind lab meat are doing it for the sake of a vision of the future. They can’t afford to let a dangerous product onto the market, it would threaten their entire movement. They’ll probably police themselves better than the FDA will.

But your meat isn't coming from a cow grazing in a field of green grass. Almost all meat that isn't "organic" (and even a large quantity of "organic meat) comes from factory farming.

Imagine a cow being stuffed into a small cubicle with no light nor fresh air right after birth, then force-fed along with thousands of others in a large hall and sleeping in its own droppings, until it is literally too fat to stand on its legs anymore, when finally, it gets loaded on an even more cramped truck and jabbed in the throat in some basement slaughterhouse, then bleeding to death over the course of a few minutes.

To me, a petri dish is a way less unappetising picture compared to that.

It's still just meat so any parasites will treat it the same way, but the way animals are cramped together in factory farming is why parasites and diseases can spread so rapidly and why antibiotics are used. It'd be easier to keep lab equipment clean while producing the meat than it would be to keep thousands of animals clean.

I eat meat and would eat lab meat if it was nutritionally the same. Modern farming is pretty bad with pollution, antibiotics, diseases, etc. and even with advanced methods to minimize pain during slaughter it doesn't always work out perfectly.

Let me present two pieces of meat.

One was grown in a lab, under scientifically controlled conditions. Completely cut off from the outside world, in a sterile environment, with no disease, constantly checked for nutrition. Raised in hospital like conditions.

One was grown in another lab of sorts. Conditions are likely climate controlled, but only because the animal being raised has been bred selectively by humans and now couldn't survive easily outside of this situation. It is surrounded by other animals on every side, many of which have broken bones, or suffer from disease due to the way we have bred them for meat and nothing else. Corpses litter the room but they are hard to distinguish amongst the thousands of animals. It is likely that the animals here have variations of flu viruses, if it is a pig or chicken farm, and these could easily mutate due to Horizontal Gene Transfer between bacterium into viruses deadly to humans. The animals are likely stressed, reducing meat quality. Outside a giant lagoon of shit and manure contaminates the groundwater and pollutes local soil and water. Most of the animals here would die if not for modern air filtration systems and antibiotics, if they are chickens they probably have a Campylobacter infection

Lab grown meat is a great thing. Factory farmed meat is honestly disgusting. I am not a vegan, I will eat meat grown in clean conditions (pasture grass fed beef for example), but if you eat food from factory farms you have no reason to complain about lab grown meat. You are eating from a fucking diseased shitpit everytime you put your fucking chicken/pork/beef from a factory farm in your mouth.

Don't get me wrong, I really applaud this accomplishment and wish to see it implemented for the removal of dharma in consumption...I just have questions about it.

You see, the natural world works in this way.

The Physical Consumes The Physical, which in turn changes state for both the Consumer and Consumed; the Consumed are then Consumed once more, which is then Consumed and Consumed again. It is an endless cycle of Consumption that somehow just works, and everything within the cycle is relatively naturally occuring.

This is why I'm curious on the impact of Consumption's Cycle. To breed life specifically for death is the highest accomplishment we've achieved in this, modifying our foods post creation another, however to introduce something entirely new that is not naturually occuring into the cycle is something extremely curious.

If you state it is not a new element, then call it what you should call it. "Cloned meat." for that is what it is. Meat that is cultivated and grown for the sake of consumption, it is not artificial, nor does it take away from the natural cycle, it is just modifying the natural process a bit.

If you are stating that it is a new element to the cycle, then I applaud you, but caution of the effect of the Consumption Cycle, and what it'll do to currently living things, and living things yet to be born (hence the test it out on a small population/animals first)

We really don't need millions of people dying to satiate the answer to the dharma of consumption.

A lot of people already knew it was possible, it's just making it economically viable and improving the method so it's better quality that's taking time and money now. There's no fat in it and it's kind of mushy because the muscle is never being used and developed, these are the next steps in the process. It was around $2m for a pound of it in 2008, now it's closer to $2k. Still incredibly expensive compared to "real" meat but it's getting there.

Once this method is perfected though, you'll probably have custom meats made at some point too when that becomes an interest.
