Though, I think buying second hand off ebay is sketchy AF.
Like >>10118651 it would be awesome to try just for the novelty. The idea of an entire, already cooked meal with a long shelf life and the ability to be heated up whenever is amazing.

Buying them in bulk for actual preping is another thing altogether.

>the idea of...

You just described litterally any Canned food anon. Only canned food tastes better and cheaper and more readilly available

>> No.10118690

I think it's better to experience other cultures through the videos on youtube of people digging into their MREs, it's pretty amazing to see personal tastes of the soldiers and especially good MREs that try to replicate comfort food that legitimately will boost the morale of soldiers from different countries. I can't imagine how much money was spent trying to make a thermostabilized pizza just to have it not last for more than 2 years in storage, far below standards of the US military.

As for actual taste? Eh, it's shitty food packed with preservatives and essential vitamins. There's diet programs that make microwavable thermostabilized meals which taste almost identical, and are more convenient. They're a cool /k/ thing really.

>> No.10118707

It's really just the epitome of canned food made for a soldier running around in all sorts of environment carrying tons of equipment. Is it good in terms of taste? Hell no, it's basically canned food with at least a fair bit of nutritional value. But they help a lot when you're going out hiking - not really when it comes to camping, though.

>> No.10118709

>>10118687
The concept of an entire meal in an airtight pouch with a long shelf life and the heating mechanism inside as well.
All in an compact convenient package that you take with you in a situation like a war or for emergency supplies for a long camping trip.
Not necessarily canned food you'd need an opener for and a heat source.

I know canned and pre-packaged food is more readily available, but like I said, I'd like to try an MRE for the novelty.

Yes, MREs is simply "food" at it's lower, the bare minimum of what is considered food. It's shit and only edible by the same people that eat shittier food on a daily bases aka Soldiers

>> No.10129240

When they say MREs have like 1200-1400 calories each, it's because 90% of that is peanut butter or sugary, fatty junk food.

The main course will be 8 oz and 200-250 calories of low quality canned food type pasta shit.

220 calories of bread or crackers, 220 calories of cheese or peanut butter.

If you seriously consider MREs for anything, just buy a jar of peanut butter, a can of cheese whiz, some regular ass crackers and some cans of SPAM from a gas station, it will be much less expensive and will be of higher quality and will have the same nutritional value and shelf life.

I had the one with the tortilla, jalapeño cheese pack, and some other shit like a banana but muffin and cinnamons and shit.
It was all pretty fucking gross to be honest. I mean, if I was out in the military and had nothing to eat, then yeah, I wouldn't be complaining. I'll still hold on to a few for the impending doom that's to happen soon.

Oh, and they make you constipated. So prepare to eat a lot of fiber after having one.

There is stuff in there that will bind you up. They don't want people crapping in fox holes.

They're actually pretty good, obviously processed and preserved but they wear that mark on their sleeves so it's no problem

This is totally anecdotal, mind you, but here goes.

Most I've eaten straight MRE's was a week when we were in the field. We had free unlimited access to clean drinking water and it was in socal in August, so pretty hot. I drank a fuckload of water all the time.

My digestive system was fine, I didn't notice anything too egregious with my cycle. I'd shit once, maybe twice a day, consistency was maybe a little less firm than usual and there was a good amount in volume, but it was pretty regular.

Some other guys would complain about being stopped up, but this never happened to me. Drink a fuckton of water, you'll be fine.

I want to try one of those high calorie survival bars, I'm just curious about how they taste. I've seen them at Walmart in the camping dept.

you've cracked the code. people who complain about MRE constipation do so because they only eat them on field ex's and don't drink enough water.

They are pretty good. The meals taste great and they come with a lot of other little snacks, I always enjoyed eating mine. Just try it, you'd probably like it.

One of my friends sent me one, it had "chicken fajitas" as the main item. it tasted like standard canned food and gave me some pretty intense farts. 3/10. Definitely wouldn't pay any sum of money to eat one.

Big difference friendo.

If you have the mentality to make it, you'll make it, as log as you dont get seriously hurt. It was the worst 3.5 years of my life. Glad i did it, but at the same time i wish i could go back in time and do something else.
