you can make the case for either word being appropriate. Anon demonstrated empathy, because even though his dog did not die, he was able to imagine or know from past experience what that feels like. When we see videos of animals being abused, we feel sad even though the abuse is not happening to us. This is what we call empathy.
Sympathy denotes that one feels sad or at least expresses pity because of another person's sorrow. This could also apply to what anon said depending on your interpretation of his post.

I specifically chose the word "empathy" because another autist anon called him a faggot for feeling sad because of the passing of Francis. Autists are able to "pass" at sympathy because they can recognize social patterns and deduce that sympathy would be appropriate. However, they struggle with truly understanding and expressing empathy.
