Do Americans really do this?

Once when I was in uni (in Canada) my roommate's Mom visited and she thought it was totally bizarre that we had "a device only for heating water" (the kettle). We asked her what she did for making tea and she said she microwaved the water, and that is what everyone she knows does. So I am asking without any irony or trolling-related undertones - do Americans actually do this?
