The better (read: expensive) a grinder is the more consistent the grind will be with less chaff. If a little mud in the bottom of your cup doesn't bother you (assuming you are brewing with a method where it could even get there) then spend however little you care to. Also, they tend to be made of better parts, less plastic that can break.

If you drink coffee daily I think that hand grinding gets pretty annoying after a while, personally. The best benefits I see to it is that they are cheaper to get a good grind out of them and they are portable. So if you travel of camp a lot and want to bring good coffee with you then it is the only way to go.

Automatics are great too and necessary if you ever want to do espresso. But for three bills you can get the Ode, which is all you will need for the home anyway and the new ones you can get on their site already have the upgraded burrs now as well.
