Early in the 20th century with mass immigration to the US, ethnicity was seen as extremely important and people were judged almost as much by ethnicity as they were by race, although it was way more extreme with race.
Being the cultural melting pot that it was, people would take pride in the nationalities of their ancestors.
However, over the years mass immigration from europe died down and focus on ehtnicity was heavily curbed with WWII as propaganda pushed to unite white US citizens in what ways it could, and now it's mostly a boomer thing, and will most likely die with either the current or next generation.
