I let 230V run through wienerwurst during my physics lessons to show my students the dangers of electricity.

The sausage shouldn't burst in flames, but start to glow orange at one end while starting to get cooked (and charred). The orange glow is caused by the sodium in it. The effect is even more spectacular with pickles:
