My mother is a good cook now that she is retired, but by and large I learned how to cook on my own, with a hefty amount of help from Alton Brown and OP's book. I think there are probably a huge amount of people out there whose parents never taught them how to do anything. My sister for instance can't cook anything. I tried walking her through basic tomato sauce and she was a nervous wreck, second guessing everything she did (how much do I have to stir? did I add the oregano too late?)

The worst part is boomers think it's funny how inept younger generations are in the kitchen. There's a webm floating around here of some woman laughing at her son for not knowing how to use the can opener. They are amused at how little they taught us. Thanks feminism
