I like actual yerba mate infusions, I drink them on most days. they wake me up better than coffee
the canned stuff probably doesn't have much to do with real yerba mate though

if you brew it the traditional way it's more stimulating than coffee. usually lasts for longer too
and the canned drinks don't really count, it's just mate-flavored soda with maybe 1% mate extract

I like both tea and coffee, but I start most days with some yerba mate. it's just more practical than coffee for me, since you can steep it however many times you want with hot water from a thermal flask and the caffeine kick is a bit more mellow and long-lasting

for coffee, I prefer black if it's nice coffee and cappuccino if its some burnt swill I got at a starbucks or some other place with shitty coffee
for tea, I like everything from black to green, oolong etc.
for yerba mate, I tend to prefer paraguayan though I've been branching out recently. I prefer well-aged mate to younger varieties

yeah yerba mate can do that to you. works stronger and longer than coffee in my experience, if you make it the OG south american way

yerba mate is still the most practical caffeine beverage - it's healthier than coffee and you can get the perfect dose by steeping it however many times you want

caffeine always makes you "high", it's a stimulant
that being said, one time after a month's break from caffeine I had my usual amount of yerba mate and I felt ecstatic, my heart was pounding etc.

not if you brew it the traditional way (use a shitton of it and steep it several times)
keeps me going for many hours even though I drink it almost everyday

sometimes I overdo it a bit when trying a new brand and I get this euphoric rush which also lasts very long

works 2x longer than energy drinks, tastes great with no sugar or sweeteners

I've been drinking yerba mate for years now, it's a great coffee substitute - brewed in the traditional method (multiple steepings, shitton of leaves, drunk with a bombilla) it can keep me going for 6 hours easily - much longer than coffee
the taste can vary, but it's pretty strong, generally "green" / woody and can have smokey notes depending on the drying process

not sure about health benefits, but it does contain a lot of B vitamins

>buy drinking straw
>fill a small cup anywhere up to anywhere from 1/3rd to 3/4 of the way (I would advise 1/3rd for beginners)
>stick the straw in there
>use water around 75 degrees celsius (anything from 70 to 85 should be okay though)
>steep until it loses flavour (around 10 times usually)
>enjoy your powerful, long-lasting caffeine rush and strange sense of relaxation

>stick the straw in there
>steep it for a minute in 70-80 degrees celsius water
>steep many times, until it loses it's flavor
>wa la
>you will be stimulated and relaxed for the next 5 hours
more advanced techniques are possible but not needed

>tfw used to drink more than half a litre of yerba mate a day
>tfw it can keep me going for 5 hours, when coffee can manage 2 houres at best
>tfw no withdrawal now that I'm on vacation
>tfw cheaper than good coffee
>no need for expensive equipment, just buy a bombilla and start sipping
>tfw shittons of vitamins and magnesium
how can coffee even compete, other than maaybe on the flavor front?

stimulating as fuck if you drink it the traditional way aka loose, drinking straw, 1/2 of the cup, many consecutive steepings and all that jazz
taste took some getting used to but I like it, a bit like strong green tea with some smokey notes (if it's dried over fire)
paraguayan mate is generally strong and smokey, complex but difficult (my favorite)
argentinian is more mild and less ground up (good for beginners)
brazilian is fresher and more vegetal, like some green teas

tastes a bit like green tea but stronger and kinda different. taste depends on varieties, most of them are dried over smoke, so they tend to have smokey notes, but you can get non-smoked ones too
generally argentinian mate is more delicate while paraguayan is stronger, can be a bit sour or taste of tobacco (my favorite variety). brazilian has a fresh, vegetal taste and is more heavily ground up
any south-american brand packaged should be fine, avoid loose mate you can find in teashops
to prepare loose mate you generally need a drinking straw, though you can try to use a french press or some kind of tea infuser
>take a small teacup
>fill it 1/3 to 3/4 with mate (best to start with 1/3 and increase if you want more taste / stimulation)
>apply 70-80 degrees celsius water (basically the same as green tea)
>wait 2 minutes
>drink
>steep it many times until it looses flavor (usually 5-10 times)
