It's a LOT better for them than bread.
I do 1 lb fat to 2 lb oats and then mix in a bunch of mixed seeds. They love it.

I make birdfeed for the birds in the garden if that counts.
One part margarine (or any left over oil or fats that would otherwise go down the landlord's drain) to two parts dry oats. I'll add whatever seeds I have on hand as well. They don't soak up the fat like the oats do so I can just add what I want. In Winter I add peanuts and hempseeds for the extra energy.
I also add a cup of rice to the margarine because the cheap stuff has water in it and I want to soak it up.
As you can see, this batch also has rowans and sunflowerseeds.

It's definitely not cheaper than margarine here.
And margarine seems to have gone up like 50% since last time I bought a bunch of it. Tough times.

I don't know about the health of it. They can take it or leave it. I'm mixing a bunch of difference seeds in there too, especially now that Winter is coming. I started adding hemp seems and then came to wonder if those will grow or if they'd treated somehow. Turns out they grow just find. I doubt they have much THC content, but it will still be fun to throw them absolutely everywhere and watch the pigs scramble next year.

I added some rowans to the last batch to make it more festive. The blackbirds like it.
