yeah most likely your pre-ground coffee was an espresso grind, which I personally find is too fine for regular brew, makes the coffee bitter and too strong, but maybe you prefer that taste. like the other anon said, just try and grind it as fine as the other stuff.
also can just be variations, different beans have different strength and flavors

It's quite hard to do it at home. You can use the French press method as described earlier, or you can get one of those cocktail whisk things and try to froth it that way. It gets even more depressing when you realise the home espresso bars that you can pick up that have steam wands don't have enough pressure to get your consistency right.
