Hello anon, what you heard is partially correct, because you can find some good tea for beginners in every variety. However some types of tea are more expensive (oolongs or white tea).

Starting with matcha and green tea is fine, especially because you can easily compare the two and find out which is your favorite. If you want to try some black tea, try to get your hands on some Ceylan stuff.
