I just had this thread going, and there are some answers in it if you care to look into it.
Also great tips on very fast easy cleaning of cast iron pans.
If you use them occasionally (once or twice a week) they are safe, but not every day I guess.

WARNING cooking with cast iron cookware might be a big health hazard.
