I do think it's a bit cringy when someone treats a reference to it like it's some amazing in-joke or, worse yet, a refence to "real" literature.
People who think having read HhGttG makes them intellectually superior to others should be whipped.

Hitchhiker's Guide is just yet another example of something be nice and likeable enough, but the fanbase being so cringy and /or toxic you catch yourself almost hating the original thing because of it.
It's the same with Rick and Morty; people almost feel an obligation to hate it so they're not associated with the fanbase. It's not THAT great a show but I don't think it's something to hate either.
