most prepared food is made from cheap shit (pasta, mayo) and produce that is otherwise going to be thrown out. Grocery stores like making prepared food because they can basically mark up and sell what would otherwise be unsalable. If it winds up in the garbage, the only real loss was 10c/lb pasta, some mayo, and the time of a $10/hr employee who would otherwise be jerking off in the corner.
